Player profile - Matt Carmichael

Matthew Carmichael was born in Singapore on 13 May 1964. Carmichael started his footballing career in the non-league circuit. Clubs included Durrington, Salisbury, Wycombe, Bromley and Basinstoke before joining the Army.

He was a PT instructor in the Royal Artillery before, Carmichael signed for Lincoln City on a month's trial in the summer of 1989 having impressed manager Colin Murphy during the club's pre-season training at an army camp. He went into Lincoln's first team at centre-forward, Carmichael responded by scoring, on his debut, the winner in a 1-0 home victory over Scunthorpe on 19 August 1989. He followed this up with the only goal in the following game, a week later, away to Aldershot and was swiftly brought out of the army and signed a professional contract. The 1989/90 season saw Carmichael score 5 goals in 26 appearances

In his second season at the club, Carmichael made occasional appearances at centre-half as well as centre-forward and spent both the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons as a virtual ever present at the heart of Lincoln's defence making 40 and 41 appearances in those seasons. The 1991/92 season saw him crowned as Lincoln's Player of the Season.

On 16 July 1993 after 18 goals from 133 appearances Carmichael joined Third Division Scunthorpe in a swap deal with Dave Hill. The manager Keith Alexander made an inspired choice to play Carmichael as a forward netting 18 goals in 42 appearances, 12 more goals than the second highest scorer with 6. The squad also included two past PNE players in Graham Alexander and Neil Trebble. He also established a club record when between 28 December 1993 and 19 February 1994 he scored in eight successive matches.

Struggling in the 1994/95 season Carmichael had a loan spell with Barnet in September 1994.

After scoring 20 goals ion 62 appearances Carmichael joined Preston on a free transfer on 10 March 1995. Carmichael became only the eleventh Preston player in their history when he scored a brace on debut in a 5-0 win over Bury on 18 March 1995, a feat not achieved since. A fortnight later he scored another goal in a 1-1 draw against Gillingham. His final game for the Lilywhites came against his former club Scunthorpe on the final day of the season as a substitute for Mark Sale.

He was released at the end of the season after scoring 3 goals in 10 appearances. On 11 August Carmichael had a trial with Mansfield, scoring in his only match before joining Third Division Doncaster a week later. His debut came on 19 August was a 2-1 win at Torquay. He stayed for just over six months with Carmichael netting 4 goals in 27 appearances.

On 29 February 1996 Carmichael joined Darlington, scoring 2 goals in 13 appearances. He helped the club reach the 1996 Endsleigh League Division Three play off final where they lost to Plymouth 1-0 on 25 May at Wembley the match would prove to be Carmichael's final game as a professional.

Following his release by Darlington, Carmichael linked up with Aylesbury scoring on his debut in the 2-1 defeat at Hitchin on 17 August. The 1997/98 season saw Carmichael linked up with Ilkeston, under the management of the man who transferred him from Lincoln, Keith Alexander. The club from the Midland Division of the Dr Martens League reached the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in 50 years of entering with Carmichael playing against former club Scunthorpe. The following season saw him join Stamford AFC and Boston before returning to Stamford in 1999/2000

He joined Wisbeach in 2000/01 however, after just five league games and one goal for the Fenman, financial constraints saw six of the squad, Carmichael included, depart the club following the 2-0 home defeat to Newport IOW on 21 October 2000. Carmichael moved on to Lincoln United, but a persistent back injury curtailed his appearances and he wound his career down with various clubs in the Lincoln & District Sunday League
