Player Profile - Stuart Rimmer

Stuart Alan Rimmer was born in Southport on 12 October 1964. He came through the ranks at Everton and made his debut as a 17-year old in a 3-1 win at Swansea on 1 May 1982. His second appearance was three days later in the victory over Leeds. Rimmer was included in the England Youth side for a summer tournament in 1982 in Norway, where he featured in three matches.

His third and final appearance for Everton was in the 3-0 defeat at Wolves on 27 December 1983.

Rimmer joined Division Four side Chester on loan in January 1985 and struck a hat-trick on his debut in 5-1 win 26 January 1985. By the end of the 1984/85 season Rimmer had comfortably had finished as the club's top scorer with 14 goals and helped City to mid-table safety. Rimmer had by now joined Chester permanently for £10,000 made available by the sale of a former North Ender Peter Zelem to Wolves for £12,500.

The 1985/86season began saw Rimmer score 21 times in the first 23 league and cup games as Chester shot to the top of Division Four. This spell included four goals at Preston on his 21st birthday in a 6-3 win. But the following month when scoring against Orient, as he collided with goalkeeper Peter Wells and was ruled out for the remainder of the season although Chester did enough to gain promotion to Division Three.

Rimmer returned to action as a late substitute against Doncaster on 4 October 1986 scored two penalties later in the month but it wasn't until the following February that he scored again from open play but ended the season with 13 goals.

Rimmer was back to his prolific best for the 1987/88 season as he struck 24 times in the league (27 in total) by the time top-flight side Watford signed him for £210,000 with half of the fee going to Everton early in March 1988. Rimmer's final goals for Chester had come in a dramatic 3-1 win over Gillingham on 2 March 1988, when he scored three times in the last 10 minutes. Rimmer had scored 67 goals in 114 league appearances for Chester.

Rimmer arrived at Watford in March 1988 with the Hornets staring relegation from Division One Despite scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Chelsea was clearly going to be an uphill struggle for Rimmer and Watford and finished second bottom

The following season saw Rimmer mover from Watford after only a couple more appearances to take his tally to 10 league appearances for £200,000 to Notts County in November 1988. His stay only lasted three months with 2 goals from 4 appearances when he followed John Barnwell to Walsall, for £150,000. Rimmer made his debut in a 7-0 home thrashing by Chelsea when he missed a penalty, but a week later scored a hat-trick in a shock 3-0 win at Sunderland to end Walsall's run of 15 league defeats. But it wasn't enough for Walsall as this finished bottom of the Second Division. The 1989/90 season saw Walsall finish bottom of Division Three despite Rimmer again finishing as the club's top scorer.

After 31 goals in 88 appearances Rimmer joined Barnsley in March 1991 and scored once in 15 appearances before returning to Chester in August 1991.

Rimmer, had become Chester's then record signing at £94,000, he made his second debut in a 2-0 home win over Fulham on 17 August 1991 and his first goal coming at Wigan the following week. He scored 15 goals during the season as Chester avoided relegation, with his tally rising to 20 in the 1992/93 season as Chester finished bottom of Division Two. This season saw him break Chester City goalscoring record previously held Gary Talbot, with his 84th such strike coming in a 2-1 home defeat to Mansfield.

Although Chester were promoted as runners-up for the 1993/94 season Rimmer only scored 8 goals as he played second fiddle to loan man and another former North Ender in Graham Lancashire in the closing stages of the campaign.

The 1994/95 season saw Chester relegated again as Rimmer struggled to command a regular place under Mike Pejic

He had two loan spells during the season when he joined Rochdale in September 1994 to make three appearances and Preston in December 1994. His two appearances for Preston came from the substitute bench replacing Alan Smart on both occasions. Both appearances ended in home victories as Preston beat Hereford 4-2 on 10 December and Barnet 1-0 a week later.

Pejic's departure in January 1995 and the appointment of new boss Derek Mann led to Rimmer becoming involved in first-team duties again but ended the season with just two goals to his name.

His last game for the club appropriately saw him have the final word, netting a late equaliser in a 1-1 home draw with Scarborough on 2 May 1988 Despite Rimmer scoring in his last three home games for the club, manager Kevin Ratcliffe opted not to renew his Chester contract.

He joined non-league side Marine and now is working as a milkman in Rimmer is scheduled to have a testimonial at Chester in the near-future and was involved in the re-naming ceremony for the Harry McNally Terrace in tribute to his former manager.
