Player Profile Bert Hales
Herbert (Bert) Hales was born in Kettering on 21 November 1908.
Hales started his career with Desborough Hotspur and Desborough Town in 1927.
Hales joined Second Division Nottingham Forest and made 3 appearances during the 1928/29 season. His league debut was a 1-1 draw at Millwall on 9 March, his only home appearance for Forest was a 2-2 draw against Port Vale a week later. His final match was a 3-0 defeat at West Brom on 1 April 1929.
He moved to Division Three south side Northampton for 1929/30 but didn’t make an appearance. In 1929 he joined non-league side Peterborough & Fletton United.
On 1 April 1930 Hales joined Second Division Stoke and made just one appearance in a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day against Bradford.
Hales then joined another Second Division side in Preston on 1 May 1931. His Lilywhite debut was a 2-2 draw at Oldham on 26 August 1931. He made his Deepdale debut on his third appearance and got his first win with a 2-1 victory over Southampton. Hales scored 5 goals in 38 matches as he became a regular in the side. His first goal came in a 5-2 home win over Bradford on 19 December.
Hales scored a further 5 goals in just 19 appearances in the 1932/33 including a brace in a 5-5 draw at Grimsby on 15 October. His final Preston match was a 1-0 home victory against Swansea Town on 22 April 1933.
On 1 June 1933 Hales joined Third Division North side Chesterfield and had his most successful season in front of goal with netting 9 goals in 33 league matches and 2 goals in 2 matches in the Third Division Cup. His debut was a 6-2 home win against Gateshead on 26 August 1933. Four days later he scored his first goal in a 3-2 victory at Wrexham. Hales had a spell of 5 goals in 4 matches in all competitions including both goals in a 2-1 win at Crewe on 21 October. He scored a second brace in the season in a 6-1 win at home to Chester on New Year’s Day.
His last appearance for Chesterfield was a 1-0 defeat at Accrington Stanley on 8 December 1934 after 10 goals from 42 league matches. He joined Stockport until the end of the season making 16 league appearances without scoring.
On 1 July 1935 Hales joined his final league club Rochdale, scoring on debut in a 2-1 home victory on 31 August against Crewe. He scored a brace in a 4-3 defeat at Carlisle on 23 November. His last match was a 1-1 draw at home to Chesterfield on 2 May 1936 and netted 4 goals in total in .38 matches.
Between 1936 and 1937 Hales joined three non-league clubs in Burton, Kidderminster and Cheltenham.
Bert Hales passed away in 1982.
