Player Profile Andy Gray
Andrew David 'Andy' Gray was born on 15 November 1977 in Harrogate.
He is the son of the former Scotland defender Frank Gray and Nephew of Eddie Gray. He started his career as a midfield player but later moved into a forward position.
Gray began his career with Leeds as a Youth Trainee and signed professional forms in the summer of 1995. One of his early games was in the 1996 League Cup Final at Wembley but suffered a 3-0 defeat against Aston Villa.
Gray joined Bury on loan in December 1998 and made 7 appearances and scored his first league goal on 10 January 1998 in a 1-1 draw at Reading.
He played 22 league games for Leeds before a £200, 000 move to Nottingham Forest in September 1998.
His Forest debut was in a 2-0 home defeat to Everton on 8 September 1998 and after 7 league appearances joined Preston on loan for a month on 23 February 1999. His Lilywhite debut was a 5-0 home win over Lincoln on the same day, helping to make three of the goals. Gray made 5 appearances with his last game a 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on 20 March. Immediately Gray joined Oldham on loan, making 4 appearances during the month.
The 1999/2000 season saw Forest return to the second tier making 22 league appearances with a further 18 appearances in 2000/01.
The 2001/02 season saw Gray score his only Forest goal in a 2-2 draw at Wolves on 6 March 2002. His 64th last Forest league appearance came in a 2-1 defeat at Deepdale on 21 April 2002.
In August 2002 Gray joined Bradford on a free transfer, scoring 15 goals in his first season including a brace on two occasions. He finished top scorer and won the Banthams player of the season. Although the club finished in 19th position his performances earned him two caps for Scotland against Lithuania on 2 April 2003 and New Zealand on 27 May 2003.
After netting 20 goals in 77 league appearances Gray joined 27 February 2004. He scored on debut in a 2-1 defeat at Reading and in his next two matches. He scored 9 in 14 matches including a brace in a 3-3 draw against Preston on the final day of the 2003/04.
Gray finished top scorer for the Blades in 2004/05 with 15 goals and scored in the first match of the 2005/06 season for the Blades. Then after 25 goals in 58 league appearances Gray returned to the Premier League after he signed for Sunderland in August 2005 for a fee of £1.1 million. However, his second stint in the Premier League was unprofitable as he scored only once in 22 appearances; that goal coming on his debut in a 3-1 home defeat against Charlton on 13 August.
On 17 March 2006, after prolonged interest from a number of clubs, he signed on loan for Burnley until the end of the season, after he was placed on the transfer list by manager Niall Quinn. His Claret debut was 1-0 defeat the following day. Gray then scored on his home debut against Norwich on 24 March.
His former club Leeds were favourites to sign him but his switch to Burnley became permanent in the summer of 2006 for around £750,000. Gray scored 14 goals from 35 appearances and would have scored more but for a broken metatarsal, incurred against Leeds and missed two months of the season. Burnley suffering a long winless run that season coincided with Gray's absence through injury, demonstrating his importance to the team as a source of goals.
Gray scored 11 goals in 18 appearances in 2007/08 the final two a brace at Charlton on 1 December 2007. After 28 goals from 69 league appearances Gray left Burnley on 18 January 2008, when he sealed an emergency loan deal with Charlton prior to a permanent move the following week. He made his debut when came on as a second half substitute the following day in Charlton's 1–1 draw away at Watford. His £1.5 million move to Charlton was finalised the following week but had to wait for his 13th game for his first goal, when he scored an equaliser in a 1–1 draw with Southampton on 12 April 2008.
After 9 goals from 45 appearances Gray joined Barnsley on 21 August 2009 for an undisclosed fee and made his debut the following day at Leicester. Gray scored his first goal in 3–1 loss to Reading on 28 August 2009 and has currently scored 8 goals from 35 appearances for the Tykes.
