James McKnight was an Inside-Forward who played for Irish side Glentoran. He joined Preston with the fee coming from the gate-receipts from a match against Blackburn.
His debut came in a 1-0 home defeat to Tottenham on 2 March 1912. After his appearance a week later in a 0-0 draw at Manchester City he was selected for the Northern Ireland team. He scored on debut against Scotland but the team lost 4-1.
Both his PNE goals came on consecutive matches as the Lilywhites won 2-1 at home to Liverpool on 30 March and a 3-0 home win over Sheffield United on 5 April.
He made 9 appearances in 1911/12 but Preston was relegated finishing second bottom in the First Division, one point from safety.
Preston gained promotion as champions of Division Two in 1912/13 but McKnight just made 3 appearances, his last was a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield on 12 October 1912.
McKnight rejoined Glentoran but in the following year returned to England and joined Nottingham Forest. He made 9 appearances for Forest although they finished bottom of the Second Division with just 7 wins from 38 matches. Preston hadn’t dome much better as they finished second bottom of the First division and was relegated again.
After the 1913/14 season McKnight returned to Ireland and finished his footballing career with Belfast Celtic.
