Player Profile Andrew Gara
Andrew Gara was born in Castlereagh (Roscommon), Ireland on 15 August 1878. The Inside Forward started his career with Preston and made his debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool on 11 March 1899. His first goals came on his fourth appearance with a brace in a 4-0 home win over West Brom on 8 April. The 1898/99 season saw Gara score 3 goals from 7 appearances.
The 1899/1900 season saw Gara net 6 goals from 19 matches. But he had to wait for his 11th appearance of the season before his first goal in a 3-1 win at Wolves on 23 December. A week later he scored a brace in a 3-0 home win over Nottingham Forest. His second brace of the season came in a 5-2 home win over West Brom on 3 February.
The 1900/01 season Gara made the most appearances and goals in one season with 11 goals from 25 matches. Gara scored 6 goals in 6 appearances between 16 February and 23 March including a brace in a 3-1 home victory over Sheffield United on 16 March. Gara finished as top scorer for the Lilywhites but could not help them avoid relegation to Division Two.
Gara’s final season for PNE was 1901/02 and netted 7 goals in 15 league matches. His only League hat-trick came in his third appearance of the season with a 4-0 win at Barnsley 0n 21 September 1901. Gara also scored a brace in a 4-1 win at Blackpool on 23 November. His last goal came in the FA Cup with a 4-2 defeat at Manchester City on 3 February 1902. In total Gara scored 27 league goals from 66 matches. His final match for North End was a 2-0 defeat at Bristol City.
For the 1902/03 season Gara moved up a Division to join First Division Nottingham Forest , but his stay was short lasting only a couple of months. His Forest debut was a 1-0 win at Sunderland on 1 September 1902. With Gara in the side Forest won the next two matches including a goal on his third appearance and his home debut with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on 13 September. This was to be his only goal for the club. His final three matches were all defeats with his last match being a 3-1 home defeat to Stoke on 18 October.
Gara returned to the Second Division with Bristol City and made his debut in a 2-2 draw at Leicester on 8 November. His first league goal came on his eight appearances in a 3-1 home win over Burton on 27 December. In March 1903 Gara scored a brace in consecutive home matches with victorirs over Leicester and Burnley. His final match after 18 league matches was a 2-0 home defeat to Lincoln City on 30 March 1903.
Andrew Gara passed away in 1941.
