Player Profile - George Lyall

George Lyall was born in Wick on 4 may 1947. Lyall started his career with Kingskettle Amateurs before joining Raith Rovers.

Lyall scored 32 goals in his first season of senior football and was chased by a number of clubs before joining Preston in March 1966. He made his debut in a 5-2 defeat at Charlton on 8 April 1966 and made his second and last appearance of the season a day later in a 1-1 draw against Rotherham at Deepdale.

His first goal for Preston came in a 2-1 victory at home to Millwall on 24 October and made 8 appearances during the 1966/67 season. Lyall scored 4 goals, including two in a space of three days over Christmas in 19 appearances as Preston just avoided relegation.

Lyall continued to struggle to get a first team appearance making only 13 appearances in the next two seasons. The latter in 1969/70 saw Preston relegated to the Third Division for the first time in their history.

It wasn't until November 1970 when Lyall finally grabbed a first team shirt and made 27 appearances, scoring 5 goals as Alan Ball's side won the Third Division title.

The first season back in the Second Division saw the Lilywhites finish in eighteenth position which Lyall netting 6 goals in 36 appearances, including a brace in a 3-0 win at Deepdale against Carlisle on 16 October.

Lyall's 100th league appearance came in a 5-2 defeat at Cardiff on 29 March. His last appearances came exactly a month later in the 2-0 defeat at Millwall. After 16 goals in 105 matches Lyall joined Nottingham Forest in May 1972.

Lyall made his Forest debut on 12 August 1972 in a 0-0 draw against Portsmouth on 12 August 1972. Forest finished fourteenth in the Second Division in the 1972/73 season, with Lyall scoring 4 goals from 31 appearances.

His most profitable season in scoring came in the 1973/74 season when Lyall netted 11 goals in 41 appearances. He scored a brace in a 5-1 victory over Middlesbrough in February 1974 and another one a month later in a 2-0 win over Portsmouth. He had also scored a brace with two penalties in a 5-1 League Cup victory over Rotherham earlier in the season. Lyall finished second in the goal scoring charts behind Duncan McKenzie AS Forest finished seventh.

Forest finished sixteenth in 1974/75 season with Lyall making 37 league appearances, scoring 7 goals.

The arrival of Brian Clough as manager in January 1975 saw Lyall being phased out of the team as Clough started moulding his side towards national and international glory.

After scoring twice in 7 appearances in the 1975/76 season Lyall made his last appearances for Forest in a 0-0 draw at Fulham on 11 October 1975. He had scored 24 gaols in 116 appearances.

In December 1975 Lyall joined Second Division Hull City and stayed for two seasons as Hull finished fourteenth on both occasions, scoring twice in 20 appearances in 1975/76 and three goals from 22 matches in 1976/77.

Lyall moved into non-league football playing for Scarborough were he scored 5 goals in 49 appearances in two seasons. He later joined Goole Town, Grantham, Bridlington Town and North Ferriby United.

Lyall lives in Derbyshire where he spends now most of his time on the golf course with his son Graham who is a club professional at Horsley Lodge Golf Club.
