Player Profile DAVID EYRES
David Eyres was born in Liverpool on 26 February 1964. Eyres starting playing part time football with Morecambe before moving to Southport and then Northern Premier League team Ryhl. Eyres was also working for the Ford's Halewood Plant when Jimmy Mullen signed him for Blackpool at the age of 25 in August 1989. When he signed his first professional contact he took a pay cut.
He soon established himself in the first team at Blackpool but in his first season with the Seasiders he suffered relegation to the Fourth Division. Blackpool lost in the play-offs against Torquay in 1991 but were successful the following season in the play-offs as Blackpool beat Scunthorpe on penalties to gain promotion to the new Second Division.
In the 1992/93 Season Eyres was leading scorer for the Seasiders which led for Jimmy Mullen now at Burnley to sign in for £90,000 in July 1993. In his four seasons with Blackpool , Eyres had made 158 league appearances scoring 38 goals.
Eyres soon made an impact at Turf Moor in the 1993/94 season with early goals as the left winger also assumed the role of penalty taker. He scored 19 league goals during his first season for Burnley just missing out on scoring 20 goals which had been achieved by Mike Conroy and Adrian Heath in the previous two seasons.
Eyres's goals that season were a major contribution as the Clarets reached the play-offs final against Stockport at Wembley. He gave one of his best ever performances for Burnley to earn the man of the match as he scored the equaliser before, another player who later signed for PNE, Gary Parkinson scored the winner with a deflection.
Eyres's goal was his twenty ninth in all competitions in 61 appearances and was Burnley's only second goal at Wembley and the first on a Sunday.
Although he never reached even half the amount of goals for the Clarets again he remained a key figure for Burnley. His first appearance in Division One was delayed due to a pre-season injury but when he returned to the side could not help Burnley avoid the drop.
The 1995/96 season saw a change of manager with Adrian Heath taking the helm but with the help of Eyres, Burnley avoided the drop to Division Three with a win at Wrexham on the penultimate Saturday of the season.
The 1996/97 was Eyres's last full season for the Clarets and for part of the season was converted by Heath to left-wing back. Due to this he only scored three goals, one via the penalty spot against Bury who was managed by a future Burnley manager in Stan Ternent.
As Chris Waddle replaced Heath, Eyres was named club captain but in October 1997 Gary Peters offered £80,000 for the 33 year old which was accepted by the Clarets. Eyres had made 175 appearances scoring 37 goals for Burnley.
Eyres made his debut for PNE against Plymouth in a 1-0 home defeat on 1 November. and scored his first goal for the club in his third appearance in a 3-1 away win at Luton . During the 1997/98 season Eyres made 28 appearances scoring 4 league goals, one of these against his old club Blackpool in a 3-3 draw. This was the fiftieth post-war league game between the two sides. During the season David Moyes replaced Peters.
Eyres doubled his league tally to 8 in the 1998/99 season as Preston reached the play-offs. Eyres also scored the opening goal at Deepdale against Gillingham in the play-off semi final heading in an Alexander cross in the fifty-fifth minute. Gillingham later equalised and scored the only goal in the return leg.
The most famous match of that season was his only FA Cup appearance, against Arsenal in the Third Round. Eyres assisted in both goals as PNE took a 2-0 lead, hooking in a cross to ex-Claret Kurt Nogan in the seventeenth minute before 4 minutes later whipping in a wicked corner for Nogan to head home. Unfortunately he only lasted an hour after he brought down Marc Overmars from behind and was red carded. The resultant free kick led to Arsenal's equaliser before Arsenal scored two further goals to win 4-2.
Eyres wes allocated the no. 11 shirt as PNE wore squad numbers for the first time in 1999/2000. Eyres marshalling the midfield with Mark Rankine helped PNE to an 18 unbeaten league spell as PNE won the Division Two championship. There was contrasting fortunes for his previous league clubs. Burnley finishing runners-up 7 points behind PNE whilst Blackpool were relegated. Two of his seven league goals of that season were scored in a 3-0 victory over Blackpool .
Eyres was on the substitute bench for start of the Division One season in 2000/01 and made his final appearance for The Lilywhites as sub in the second leg of the Worthington Cup defeat at Coventry. Eyres had made 108 league appearances for PNE scoring 19 goals.
Eyres moved to Oldham on a free transfer in October 2000.and swept the clubs player of the year awards in his first season. During the 2003/4 season, Eyres and teammate John Sheridan took on joint caretaker manager roles after Iain Dowie's departure to Crystal Palace .
