Player Profile KURT NOGAN

Kurt Nogan was born in Cardiff on 9 September 1970 and signed schoolboy forms for Luton after being spotted as a 16 year old playing Saturday afternoon football in Cardiff . Luton had strong Welsh roots at the time as Ceri Hughes, Mark Pembridge and Jason Rees all started their careers with Luton and went on to represent their Country.

Nogan made an unforgettable debut, scoring on his debut against Liverpool at Anfield in a 2-2 draw on 13 January 1990. Nogan scored in his next away match at Wimbledon as the Hatters won 2-1. By the end of the 1989/90 Nogan had made 10 League appearances. His potential was recognised by his Country as in May 1990 he made the first of two Welsh under 21 caps scoring in a 2-0 victory against Poland .

Nogan struggled to establish himself at Kenilworth Road as the following season he only made 9 league appearances with most of these coming from the substitute bench and didn't add to his tally of league goals.

The 1991/92 season saw Nogan make 14 League appearances and scored his third league goal, (his first at home) in a 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday in October 1991.

Following relegation from the top tier in football at the end of the 1991/92 season Nogan was released after making 33 appearances for Luton in September 1992.

Nogan joined Peterborough on trial but after just one substitute cup appearance he left to join Brighton in October 1992.

In his first season for Brighton Nogan finished as top scorer scoring 20 league goals from 30 appearances. Nogan was leading scorer again in 1993/94 campaign scoring 22 league goals (26 goals in all competitions), including a hat-trick against Cambridge .

The 1994/95 season saw Nogan score 8 goals in his first nine games, but the goals dried up and didn't score in the following 17 matches. After scoring an impressive 49 goals from 79 league appearances and being sought after by a number of clubs, Jimmy Mullen signed Nogan for £300,000 in April 1995 as Burnley tried to avoid being relegated. The goals didn't come and Burnley was relegated to the Second Division.

His first full season for Burnley in 1995/96 saw him score 20 league goals before Christmas, but the goals dried up in the New Year, although he was selected in the end of season PFA Second Division XI.

The following season saw it turn sour for Nogan and Burnley after a very public fall out. Nogan was axed from the squad prior to Christmas and put on the transfer list by Adrian Heath as he refused to sign a new contract and missed training. Nogan was liked to a number of clubs at home and in France but after scoring 33 league goals from 92 appearances, Nogan signed by Preston in March 1997 for a knock down fee of £150.000.

Nogan made his PNE debut in a 2-1 defeat at Blackpool on 15 March 1997 and made a further 6 appearances that season.

Nogan's first goals for the club was the following season, scoring both goals in a 2-0 home win against Watford in August 1997. Nogan made 22 league appearances in 1997/98 scoring 5 goals.

The 1998/99 season saw Nogan finish top scorer for the Lilywhites with 21 goals, 18 coming in the league (including a brace against Stoke & Lincoln), and 3 in the FA Cup, 2 of these in the televised cup tie at Deepdale as Preston took a 2-0 lead before Arsenal hit back to win 4-2. Nogan scored his 100th League goal against his first club Luton. His goal scoring exploits was recognised by Wales again by playing in a Wales B international.

This was to be Nogan's last full season for PNE as Nogan scored only 3 goals prior to January in the following season. His final goal for PNE, in their Third Division Championship winning season was scored against his home town club Cardiff as they were defeated 4-0 in the first game of 2000. It was Cardiff who signed Nogan two months later for £100,000 after making 93 league appearances for Preston and scoring 27 goals.

In his first full season for Cardiff, Nogan failed to start a single match in their promotion campaign. Nogan had injury problems from the outset and as Cardiff didn't have a reserve side his opportunities for regular football was limited to the odd outing from the subs bench. His only goal for Cardiff was an injury time winner in November 2000 as Cardiff beat Hartlepool 3-2.

Nogan was released by Cardiff after only starting in 4 of the 18 matches for the Bluebirds, after a trial failed to materialise at Rushden & Diamonds in September 2001 he later ended up at Tiverton Town.
