Player Profile – Arthur Mounteney
Arthur Mounteney was born in Belgrave, Leicestershire on 11 February 1883 and played as an inside forward.
He moved from Leicester Imperial to Leicester Fosse and made his league debut in 1903/04 with a 2-2 draw at home to Bolton on 30 January 1904. His other appearance in the season saw him score his first goal in a 2-1 home defeat to Bradford City on 16 April.
Mounteney whose nickname was ‘Pecker’ finished the top scorer in 1904/05 with 20 goals, 10 in the league and 10 in the FA Cup. His cup goals included four in a 10-1 win over non-league Linby Church on 29 October, a brace in the next round as Leicester beat Gresley Rovers 5-0 on 12 November and a hat-trick over West Brom on 14 January with a 3-1 victory.
His final match was on 24 April with a 0-0 draw at Bradford City. In two seasons Mounteney had scored 11 goals from 30 league appearances. Leicester Fosse had struggled in those years finishing bottom of Division Two in 1903/04 and fifth bottom in 1904/05.
The following season he then moved to Birmingham and spent three seasons with the club and netted 29 league goals in 91 appearances and scored the club's last goal at their Muntz Street ground before they moved to St Andrews in a 3-1 win over Bury on 22 December 1906.
He scored one hat-trick for Birmingham which was in his penultimate match for the club in a 3-0 home win over Chesterfield on 17 April 1909.
For the 1909/10 season, Mounteney joined Preston. His PNE debut came on the opening day of the season as the Lilywhites lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest on 1 September 1909. He scored 6 goals from 31 appearances with his first goal coming on his fifth match in a2-2 home draw to Bradford City on 25 September.
The following season Mounteney netted 5 goals from 21 appearances, his last goals for the club was a brace in a 2-0 win at Aston Villa on 8 April 1911. His final PNE appearance came two weeks later in a 2-0 defeat at Woolwich Arsenal.
He had an eventful day on 1 October 1910 when he was summoned in front of Preston Court for being drunk in charge of a child under seven. The case was dismissed due to lack of evidence and played later in the day in the 2-1 victory at Deepdale to Newcastle.
For the 1911/12 season Mounteney joined Grimsby and in two seasons scored 17 league goals from 45 appearances. Mounteney. He scored one hat-trick for Grimsby ina 3-1 win at Fulham on 20 April 1912.
Mounteney then finished his football career in the non-league with Portsmouth and Hinckley Athletic.
Although his football career had ended, his sporting career did not. He played as a right-handed batsman and occasional bowler for Leicestershire from 1911 to 1924, scoring 5306 runs, including six centuries and a top score of 153, at an average of 20.8.
He died in Leicester on 1 June 1933 aged 50.
