Player Profile – Arthur Mounteney

Arthur Mounteney was born in Belgrave, Leicestershire on 11 February 1883 and played as an inside forward.

He moved from Leicester Imperial to Leicester Fosse and made his league debut in 1903/04. In two seasons Mounteney had scored 11 goals from 30 appearances. Leicester Fosse had struggled in those years finishing bottom of Divison Two in 1903/04 and fifth bottom in 1904/05. He had a nickname as ‘Pecker’ and finished the top scorer in 1904/05

The following season he then moved to Birmingham and spent three seasons with the club and netted 29 league goals in 91 appearances and scored the club's last goal at their Muntz Street ground before they moved to St Andrews in a 3-1 win over Bury on 22 December 1906.

For the 1909/10 season, Mounteney joined Preston. His PNE debut came on the opening day of the season as the Lilywhites lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest on 1 September 1909. He scored 6 goals from 31 appearances with his first goal coming on his fifth match in a2-2 home draw to Bradford City on 25 September.

The following season Mounteney netted 5 goals from 21 appearances, his last goals for the club was a brace in a 2-0 win at Aston Villa on 8 April 1911. His final PNE appearance came two weeks later in a 2-0 defeat at Woolwich Arsenal.

He had an eventful day on 1 October 1910 when he was summoned in front of Preston Court for being drunk in charge of a child under seven. The case was dismissed due to lack of evidence and played later in the day in the 2-1 victory at Deepdale to Newcastle.

For the 1911/12 season Mounteney joined Grimsby and in two seasons scored 17 league goals from 45 appearances. Mounteney then finished his football career in the non-league with Portsmouth and Hinckley Athletic.

Although his football career had ended, his sporting career did not. He played as a right-handed batsman and occasional bowler for Leicestershire from 1911 to 1924, scoring 5306 runs, including six centuries and a top score of 153, at an average of 20.8.

He died in Leicester on 1 June 1933 aged 50.
