Player Profile - Brian Barry-Murphy
Brian Barry-Murphy was born in Cork on 27 July 1978 and is the son of the former Gaelic footballer and Hurling champion Jimmy Barry-Murphy.
Barry-Murphy started his career with Cork City making 82 appearances and scoring twice between 1995 and 1999.
The left-sided midfielder joined Preston shortly before the start of the 1999/2000 and made his debut as a substitute for Rob Edwards in a Worthington Cup tie 2-0 victory at Wrexham on 24 August 1999.
After making appearances for the Republic of Ireland Under 21 side against Yugoslavia and Malta he required a cartilage operation.
He made his full debut in the number eight shirt also against Wrexham but this time in the Auto-Windscreens Shield on 7 December. Preston won 4-1 but Barry-Murphy became the first person to be sent off when he received a second yellow card under the experimental '10-yard rule'. A further cartilage operation meant he made his league debut as a sub on the final day of the season in a 2-0 win at Bristol City.
Twelve of his fourteen appearances in 2000/01 came from the sub's bench. Barry-Murphy was limited to four appearances in 2001/02, but captained the title winning reserve side. He did have a month's loan in February 2002, making his debut in a 3-2 defeat at Swansea on 15 February and scored his first league goal in his eighth and last appearance in a 2-1 defeat at Leyton Orient on 12 March.
Barry-Murphy made his first appearance in the 2002/03 season was whilst on loan to Hartlepool in a 2-1 victory at Exeter on 9 November and made 8 appearances in his two month loan before he was recalled to PNE due to injuries. Barry-Murphy made a further two league appearances for Preston; the last of his 21 appearances in total came in a 3-0 defeat at Ipswich on 18 January 2003.
Barry-Murphy joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer on 31 January 2003. His debut for the Owls' was in a 4-0 home defeat against Wolves on 1 February 2003. Barry Murphy went on to make 17 appearances during the season including the 7-2 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, but Wednesday was still relegated to League One.
The 2003/04 season saw Barry-Murphy finally get the change to cement a first-team place by making 41 league appearances as the Owls' finished in 16 th position. But the 3-1 defeat at home to Q.P.R. on 8 May 2004 was his last as he was one of 13 players released at the end of the season.
Barry-Murphy joined Bury in July 2004 and made his debut in a 3-1 win at home to Yeovil on 7 August. He then scored in his next two matches at Bristol Rovers and Grimsby and repeated the feat again in April in victories against Cheltenham and Notts County and netted 6 times in 45 appearances. The following season saw Barry-Murphy score 3 times in 40 appearances one of these goals against Wrexham on 27 August was the 1000th goal for Bury in Tier 4 of the English Football League. This made Bury the first club to score 1000 goals in all four tiers of the league.
The 2006/07 season saw Barry-Murphy limited to just 14 league matches before he was sidelined with a hamstring injury in January 2007.
Barry Murphy's first match of 2007/08 was his 100 th league appearance for Bury in a 2-1 defeat at MK Dons. He made a further 30 appearances during the season with his performances earning him a new two year contract to extend his record of 131 appearances for Bury, scoring 10 times.
