Player Profile – Alec Farrall
Alec Farrall was born in West Kirby on 3 March 1936. Farrall was a Wing-Half and came through the juniors at Everton. He signed professional forms in March 1953 and made one appearance in the 1952/53 season for the Second Division club in a 3-0 defeat at home to Lincoln on 22 April 1953.
He made one appearance in each of the next four seasons as Everton got promoted to Division One in 1953/54.
In May 1957 Farrall joined Preston and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Sunderland on 19 October. As Jim Baxter continued in the number ten shirt he had to wait until 11 January 1958 for his second appearance and scored on his home debut as the Lilywhites beat West Brom 3-1. Farrall made a further four appearances during the season as PNE finished runners-up to Wolves.
The following season Farrall scored 4 league goals in 11 appearances although he did score three goals in a week as he scored in three consecutive matches including 2 in the FA Cup.
The 1959/60 season Farrall scored a brace in a 4-3 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday and only the woodwork stopped him getting a hat-trick. His last appearance was in a 2-1 defeat at ManchesterCity on 23 April1960. Farrall had netted 9 goals from 27 league appearances for Preston.
In July 1960 Farrall joined Fourth Division Gillingham for a fee of £2,000 and made his debut in a 2-2 draw at Chester on 20 August. His first goal for the Gills came on his third appearance a week later in a 4-2 home win over Workington and scored two further goals the following month to take it 3 goals in 6 appearances. In total Farrall scored 6 goals from 41 appearances, he netted a further 5 goals from 37 appearances in 1961/62 as the Gills continued to struggle as they finished in twentieth position. Two of the goals came in a 4-0 home win over Hartlepools on 18 November. He did score in a 5-1 win against Accrington Stanley but was removed from the records when Stanley resigned from the Football League.
The 1962/63 season the Gills climb up the table and just miss out on promotion via goal difference with Farral scoring 3 times from 41 appearances. A brace was also scored in a 3-0 win over non league Bedford Town in the FA Cup on 24 November. The 1963/64 season saw Farrall become captain, he scored once but only miss one match as they won the Division Four title. The goal came on his third appearance of the season with a 1-1 draw at Southport on 31 August
The following season was Farrall’s last with Gillingham as they finished seventh in Division Three and had netted 19 goals in 202 league appearances for the club. His last match for Gillingham was a 3-1 defeat at home to Bristol Rovers on 24 April 1965.
June 1965 saw Farrall join Lincoln but only stayed for one season scoring twice in 20 appearances as the club had to seek re-election. He made his Imps debut with a 4-0 loss at Doncaster on 21 August. The first of his two goals came on his home debut in his third appearance a week later with a 2-1 defeat against Notts County.
July 1966 saw Farrall join Third Division Watford and equalled his season best scoring 6 goals from 35 league appearances, finishing just one point behing second place Middlesbrough. Farrall scored a brace twice inside a month, the first came in a 3-0 win at Bristol Rovers on 10 December. The other brace came in a 4-2 FA Cup victory at Enfield which Watford won 4-2.
His last season in league football was in 1967/68 as he netted twice in 13 appearances as Watford finished sixth. In total Farrall had scored 8 goals from 48 appearances for Watford. His last game was a 2-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in the Third Division on 30 December 1967.
