Player Profile Len Gallimore
Leonard Gallimore was born in Northwich on 13 September 1913. He played local football for Dick Kerr’s XI and Bainton Victoria before joining Preston in 1933.
Gallimore played left-back in the Preston side that won promotion to the First Division in the 1933/34 season. He made his debut in a 1-0 home defeat to Bradford City on 7 March 1933 and made a further 3 appearances in the next month. Over the next couple of seasons he spent most of his time in the reserves. However, in the early part of 1936-37 season he played in three of the five matches alongside his more talented brother, Frank Gallimore (244 PNE league appearances between 1931-39) with Len wearing number three and Frank number two. His last appearance was a 5-0 defeat at Wolves on 9 January 1937 which had also included is brother Frank.
Gallimore joined Liverpool but failed to make the first team and moved onto Watford. He made 30 appearances during the 1937/38 season with is debut coming in a 3-1 away defeat at Walsall on 26 October 1937, Watford finishing fourth in Division Three South
He made a further 26 league appearances in 1938/39 as Waford finished fourth again. The outbreak of War halted his league appearances. In a friendly at Vicarage Road in 1945, Arsenal were two players short and therefore Gallimnore was loaned to Arsenal for the match and scored a brace, something he never achieved in his league career.
On the return to the league programme in 1945/46 Gallimore played in the first eight matches of the season to take his total league appearances to 64 for the Hornets. His last appearance was in a 2-0 home defeat to Walsall on 28 September 1946.
Gallimore was sacked by Watford, he was convicted several times of criminal offences and twice jailed, whilst still living in Watford. Len Gallimore died in 1978.
