Player Profile Jon Macken
Jonathan Paul Macken was born on 7 September 1977. Macken stared his career with Manchester United but never made a first team league appearance.
Macken joined Preston in July 1997 for a fee of £250,000 and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Gillingham on 9 August 1997. His first goal came three days later in a 3-1 League Cup first leg win at Rotherham. His first league goal came in the next match on his home debut in a 2-1 victory against Millwall on 16 August. Macken made 29 league appearances during the 1997/98 season, scoring 6 goals. The following season saw Macken score 8 goals in 42 appearances including a brace in a 4-3 win at Lincoln on 29 August.
The 1999/2000 season saw Macken score 22 league goals and 25 in total as Preston won the Division Two title. Macken scored 5 goals in 6 matches during September / October 1999, including on his 100 appearance for the club in a 2-1 Worthington Cup defeat at Arsenal. He scored two goals in a game on five separate occasions during the season as was nominated in the PFA's Division Two side for 1999/2000.
Preston's return to the second tier saw Macken lead the goal scoring table for PNE with 19 league goals plus a hat-trick in a 4-1 League Cup tie against Shrewsbury. He also scored after 19 seconds at home to Grimsby on 23 December and scored a brace on four separate occasions. He was chosen for the PFA side for the second year running and won the club's player of the year award.
The 2001/02 season saw Macken score 8 league goals from 31 appearances. His last goal was in the 3-2 defeat at Maine Road on 10 February 2002 and his last appearance for the club was in a 1-0 victory at home to Birmingham on 2 March. Macken had become unsettled joined Manchester City for a record Preston fee received at the time of £5m after scoring 63 goals from 184 appearances for the Lillywhites.
Macken made his debut on 8 March and scored on his debut in a 2-0 win at Bradford. The following month Macken scored a brace in a 5-1 win at home to Barnsley and totaled 5 goals from 8 appearances for City by the end of the season.
Injuries limited him to just 5 appearances in 2002/03. The following season saw Macken score 4 goals in all competitions including an injury time winner against Tottenham in the FA Cup when City were 3-0 down at half-time and had had Joey Barton sent off before the astonishing come back in the second half. His only league goal for the season came in the Manchester derby in a 4-1 victory.
The 2005/06 season saw Macken struggle to find the net as he scored one goal in 23 appearances although many came as a substitute, he did score a brace in a 7-1 League Cup victory over Barnsley .
After 7 goals in 51appearances Macken joined Crystal Palace for £1.1m. Macken made his Palace league debut in a 2-1 home defeat against Luton on 6 August. Initially, he did not get into the Palace team, and was behind England international Andrew Johnson and Republic of Ireland International Clinton Morrison. Poor form by Morrison in the run-up to the Christmas period gave Macken his chance, and he scored his first competitive goal for Palace in 4-1 victory at Coventry on 14 October 2005 and scored again on 26 December in a 2-0 victory at Ipswich, although he was later sent off.
Johnson was sold to Everton, prompting the return of Sándor Torghelle to the club from his loan at Panathinaikos, creating speculation that Macken may be leaving the club, but the appointment of Peter Taylor as manager appeared to silence this. Taylor , a known fan of Macken, was reportedly trying to sign him for Hull, while he was in charge there.
After making two appearances for Palace in the 2006/07 season, the last of these was in a 2-1 home defeat against Notts County in the League Cup Macken join Ipswich on loan and handed the number 27 shirt. The loan was agreed with Ipswich paying an increased proportion of his wages. Macken had scored twice in 25 league appearances for the Eagles.
He made his debut on 9 September in a 2-1 home win against Southampton . His first goal came on his sixth appearance scoring a 10 minute penalty against former club Preston on 17 October, but three goals in the second half by PNE saw the Lillywhites win 3-2. Macken scored two further goals in his loan spell with a goal in a 2-2 draw at Cardiff on 9 December and one in a 2-1 victory at Coventry on Boxing Day. His final appearance for Ipswich came in a 2-0 defeat at West Brom on 30 December and had scored 3 goals from 14 appearances.
Macken joined Derby on 31 January and made his Rams debut in 2-2 draw at home to Hull on 10 February. Macken made 8 league appearances for Derby and played in both of the Play Off semi final legs against Southampton but was not involved in the victory at Wembley.
Although Derby were struggling in the Premiership he could not get in the side joining Barnsley on loan on 1 November and made his debut two days later in a 1-0 home victory against Preston. It took him until his tenth appearance before he scored his first Barnsley goal in a 3-3 defeat at Bristol City on 22 December and then scored a brace in his next appearance in a 3-3 draw against Stoke.
Macken was recalled to Derby on 27 December and made three further league appearances to make a total of 11 appearances for the Rams, his last appearance was in a 1-0 home defeat to Wigan on 12 January.
Macken made his move to Barnsley permanent for a fee of £100,000 on 28 January 2008 and scored in his first two home appearances for the club in his second spell in victories over Colchester and West Brom . His last goal was from the penalty spot in a 2-1 victory over his former club Preston on 12 April 2008.
Macken has represented the England U-20 team at the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship and has gained a full international cap for Republic of Ireland on 18 August 2004 in a 1-1 draw at Landsdowne Road against Bulgaria when he replaced Roy Keane in the 64 minute.
