Player Profile: David Brown

 

David James Brown was born in Hartlepool on 28 January 1957. He started his career with Horden Colliery before signing for Middlesbrough in February 1977. He made 10 appearances for Boro as they finished mid table in Division One in 1976/77.

 

Brown joined Plymouth on loan in August 1979 and made 5 appearances before joining Third Division Oxford in October 1979. In two years with Oxford Brown made 21 appearances for the club.

 

August 1981 saw Brown join Bury and stayed for five years which included a promotion to Division Three in 1984/85, he made 146 league appearances for the Shakers. 

 

Brown was signed by john McGrath at Preston in June 1986 and made his debut with six other players on the opening day of the 1986/87 season as PNE drew 1-1 at Tranmere on 23 August.

 

The goalkeeper shared his duties with the young Alan Kelly and made 24 appearances with 6 clean sheets as the Lilywhites won the Fourth Division title.     The 1987/88 season Brown continued to share the duties with Kelly and made 27 appearances and appeared in the two legged Northern Final against Burnley.

 

Brown stated the season as number one but lost his place to Roy Tunks due to loss of form cumulating in a 6-0 defeat at Wolves. In January 1989 Brown joined Scunthorpe on loan and made 5 appearances for the Fourth Division club.

 

Brown returned to the side and played in the last three matches of the season as PNE finished seventh. His 74th and last league match was a 3-1 draw at Deepdale against Third Division Champions Wolves on 13 May 1989.

 

In July 1989 Brown joined Halifax and made 38 appearances in two seasons for the Fourth division Club.
