Player Profile – Horace Barnes
Horace Barnes was born in Sheffield in 1890. He began his football career playing as an inside left for Wadsley Bridge.
In 1908 Jimmy Methven signed Barnes for Derby and scored on debut in a 2-2 draw at Blackpool on 24 October 1908. His first brace came in a 5-1 home win over Leeds City on 23 January 1908.
Barnes scored a brace twice in the next two seasons before scoring his first hat-trick in a 5-1 home win over Blackpool on 24 February 1912.
Although Derby were relegated to Division Two at the end of the as a 1-1 draw at Newcastle in which he scored the goal for Derby on 25 April 1914. Barnes made 153 appearances for Derby and scored 74 goals.
In 1914 Manchester City purchased Barnes for £2,500.00. In his first season with the Manchester team he made 25 league appearances and scored 12 goals, helping the team to fifth in the first division, three points behind champions Everton. Barnes' first goal for City came in a 4–1 victory against Bradford City on the opening day of the season on 1 September. His first brace for City came in a 3-0 home win against Preston in an FA Cup replay on 16 January 1915.
Barnes' career was interrupted by the First World War which he spent working in a munition factory. He was able to resume his footballing career in the 1919/20 football season in which he was City's top scorer with 22 goals and his best season in front of goal for the club. Barnes scored one hat-trick with a 4-1 win against Notts County on 27 September, City finished seventh in the league that season.
In the 1920/21 season he was City's second top scorer having scored 17 goals in 41 league appearances. Tommy Browell was the team’s highest scorer with 31 goals. Manchester City came second in the league that season, 5 points behind champions Burnley. This was City's highest position in the league since the 1903/04 football season.
In the 1921/22 l season, Barnes scored 20 league goals that season, one goal less than City's top scorer Tommy Browell. The team finished tenth in the league with Barnes scored two hat-tricks during the season. The first was a 4-1 win over Man.Utd. on 22 October with his second four weeks later as City beat West Brom 6-1.
In the 1922/23 Barnes was City's top scorer in that season and the team finished eighth in the league. Three of Barnes' goals came in a 5–1 victory against Cardiff City on 23 December.
In the 1923/24 football season Manchester City moved to a new ground, Maine Road, and Horace Barnes scored the first goal at the new stadium in a 2–1 victory against Sheffield United on the opening day of the season on 25 August. Tommy Johnson scored the other goal for City. The team ultimately finished eleventh in the league on 42 points and Barnes was the team’s top scorer with 20 goals. Barnes played in 7 of City's 8 games in the FA Cup that season. The team were ultimately defeated in the semi-final by Newcastle 2-0
The 1924/25 football season was to be Barnes' last with Manchester City his last goal for City was in a 1–1 draw with Huddersfield Town on 18 October whilst his last match was a 1-1 draw at Tottenham on 10November. He had appeared for City 217 times and scored 120 league goals.
Barnes joined Preston and scored on his debut for the club with a 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest on 15 November. Barnes scored in his first three matches and in his first season at the club he was joint top scorer with 8 goals. However the team finished in twenty-first place in the league and were relegated to the Second Division.
He began the 1925/26 season with a 3-0 defeat at Wolves but then scored a brace in consecutive matches with a 3-2 victory over Portsmouth on 31 August and a 4-2 win over Swansea a week later. His final goals for the club were his third brace of the season with a 5-3 victory over Stockport on 3 October. His last match for PNE was a 3-1 defeat at Blackpool on 7 November 1925. He had netted 16 goals in 39 appearances for Preston.
Barnes was transferred to Oldham and his debut was a goal in a 3-2 win against Blackpool on 21 November. In his next match he scored his only hat-trick for the club with a 10-1 FA Cup win over non-league Lytham a week later. Barnes scored a brace in a 4-3 league win over Barnsley on 2 January and finished the season with 10 goals in 21 matches for the Second Division side.
His final season prior to retiring was the 1926/27 season and scored his last goal with a 5-2 win at Grimsby on 12 February 1927. His last match was a 1-0 win at Southampton on 19 March. He had scored 16 goals in 41 league games.
Barnes lived in Manchester for the rest of his life and worked as a packer. He died at his home in Clayton in 1961.
Barnes is regarded as one of Manchester City's greatest ever players. In 1977 the Manchester City Council named eleven streets in a new estate in Moss Side after famous City players including Barnes. He is listed as the thirteenth greatest ever City player in Ian Penney's book The Essential History of Manchester City and twentieth on the Times website.
