Player Profile – John Brown
John Christopher Brown was born in Bradford on 30 September 1947. Whilst playing for Bradford schoolboys as a goalkeeper he attracted interest from a number of football league clubs as he reached the English Schools’ Trophy semi-finals.
After working as an apprentice joiner, Brown joined Prestonin March 1965. He replaced John Barton as the understudy to Alan Kelly senior and made his debut in a 4-2 defeat at Bolton on 8 October 1966, which Wyn Davies scored a hat-trick for the Trotters.
With Gerry Stewart covering the covered the odd match when Kelly was unavailable Brown joined Stockport on loan in November 1970 and made 26 appearances.
He had to wait almost five years for his second appearance for the Lilywhites with a 1-0 win in a League Cup tie at Tranmere on 8 September 1971 and then appeared in the next 5 league games. The 1972/73 season saw Brown make 12 league appearances.
Brown took over number one shirt after Kelly career ending injury on 15 September 1973. He made 30 appearances during the season but Bobby Charlton’s side was relegated to Division Three at the end of the season.
Brown played the first 19 matches of the 1974/75 season but following the signing of Roy Tunks from Rotherham, his last match for PNE was a 4-1 home defeat to Southend on 9 November after 67 league appearances.
In July 1975 Brown joined Stockport, but stayed just for one season making 15 appearances as County finished fourth bottom of Division Four.
In July 1976 Brown joined Wigan, who was still playing in the Northern Premier League. He made 69 league appearances for the club before they were voted into the Football League.
Brown was Wigan's first ever goalkeeper in the Football League and kept a clean sheet as Wigan drew 0-0 at Hereford on the opening day of the 1978/79 season.
Brown was Wigan’s Player of the Year in 1980 but left after Wigan finished third and promoted to Division Three in 1981/82. Brown had made 93 league appearances for the Latics’ and a total of 162 appearances when adding the league matches in the Northern Premier League.
Brown returned to the non-league when he joined Macclesfield in 1982.
