Player Profile – Shaun Garnett
Shaun Maurice Garnett was born in Wallasey on 22 November 1969. He turned professional in June 1988 and his debut for Tranmere was a 3-0 win at Newport on 30 April 1988.He made 16 appearances in Tranmere’s promotion from the Third Division in 1990/91 and scored his first goal in a 1-0 home win against Bournemouth on 18 March 1991. Matches were limited but scored twice for Tranmere in 1992/93 with goals against Blackpool in the League Cup and Bristol Rovers in Division One.
It was also during the 1992/93 season that Garnett went on loan three times. His first loan team was Chester making 9 appearances in October and November 1992. On 11 December Garnet joined Preston and made his debut on John Beck’s first match as manager when PNE lost 5-2 at home to Port Vale the day after . On his third match he scored his first Lilywhite goal in a 2-2 draw at home to Exeter on 28 December, Garnett scored on his next league appearance for PNE in a 2-1 defeat at Deepdale against Hull on 9 January. His tenth and final match for Preston came in a 1-0 home win over Brighton on 13 February.
On 26 February Garnett joined Wigan on loan and scored once in 13 appearances. Garnett completed an unwanted hat-trick of being involved in three relegations from the same division during the same season, at Football League Second Division sides Chester (where he was the final debutant in Harry McNally's seven-year spell in charge, Preston and Wigan.
Garnett began a regular for Tranmere and made a further 70 league appearances in the next two seasons with 3 goals. Garnett scored 5 goals in 112 league matches for Tranmere, in a period that saw Rovers climb from the fourth to the second tier of English professional football, with Garnett making three appearances at Wembley Stadium for Rovers between May 1990 and May 1991. Hiss final match being a 2-2 draw at Prenton Park against Birmingham on 9 March 1996.
Two days later Garnett joined Swansea for £200,000 but just made 15 appearances in 18 months. On 19 September Garnett joined First Division Oldham for £150,000 and stayed for 6 years. His debut was a1-0 defeat at home to Barnsley on 21 September, his first goal for the Latics came in a 3-2 defeat at Port Vale on 12 April and made 23 appearances but could not help the team avoid relegation to Division Two.
His first match of 1997/98 saw him score in a 3-1 win at home to York on 9 August and went on to score 3 goals in 34 appearances. Garnett also received two red cards against Luton and Burnley during the season. In the 1998/99 season Garnett made 37 league appearances, both his goals that season came in April 1999. A further two goals were scored in the 1999/2000 season in 32 league appearances.
His most appearances for the Latics in one season came in the 2000/01 campaign with 39 appearances, his only goal that season came in his first match with a 4-1 home win over Port Vale on 12 August.
In total for Oldham Garnett made 173 league appearances and netted 9 goals, his final match was a 2-1 defeat at Colchester on 18 September 2001.
Garnett joined Nationwide Conference side Halifax for 2002/03 in a loan move that became permanent. The following season he moved to Morecambe, in another loan deal that was made permanent. He was released at the end of the 2003/04 season and joined Harrogate Town as player-coach before returning to Tranmere as part of the coaching staff at Prenton Park.
