Player Profile - Darren Byfield
Darren Asherton Byfield was born in Birmingham on 29 September 1976 and has been a journeyman footballer playing for thirteen league clubs.
Byfield started his career with Aston Villa and made his league debut in a 1-1 draw at Leeds on 28 December 1987.
After 7 league appearances Byfield joined Preston on loan in November 1998, he scored his first league goal on debut in a 4-1 win at home to Burnley on 7 November 1998. Byfield made 5 league appearances for the Lilywhites and made his last appearance on Boxing Day in a 1-0 defeat at York.
The 1999/2000 season saw Byfield go on loan three times, Northampton in August 1988 with a goal on his second of 6 appearances, Cambridge a month later with 4 appearances and 3 appearances for Blackpool in March 2000.
In June 2000 Byfield turned down a number of offers to join Walsall and scored a brace on his second appearance with a last minute winner in a 3-2 victory on 19 August 2000. He scored 10 league goals during the season plus a 109th minute winner in the 2001 Second Division Play Off Final as Walsall beat Reading 3-2.
After 13 goals from 77 appearances Byfield joined Rotherham for £50,000 in March 2002.He scored in his first two appearances in draws against West Brom and Birmingham.
The 2002/03 season Byfield scored 13 goals including 4 in a 6-0 win at Millwall on 10 August 2002 and helped him to gain his first International cap with Jamaica. His only International goal came in a 2-0 victory over Paraguay on 9 July 2003.
After 22 goals from 68 appearances, Byfield joined Sunderland in a swap deal in February 2004 and scored on debut in a 2-2 draw against Watford on 7 February 2004. His stay at Sunderland only lasted five months as he found he was surplus to requirements after 5 goals from 17 appearances.
In July 2004 Byfield joined Gillingham on a free transfer and scored in his second and third appearances in 2-1 home victories over Leeds and Preston. The 2005/06 season Byfield scored 13 league goals, including a brace on three occasions.
After 19 goals from 67 appearances Byfield joined his tenth club Millwall on a free transfer in June 2006 after rejecting to stay with Gillingham.
Byfield scored again on debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Yeovil on 5 August 2006. He scored at hat-trick against former club Gillingham in a 4-1 victory on New Years Day 2007. Three weeks later Byfield scored a brace as Millwall beat another former club in Rotherham 4-0. In 31 league appearances Byfield had netted 16 goals. He had scored in his final Lions appearance in a 2-2 draw at Bradford on 5 May 2007.
Byfield joined Bristol City in August 2007 and scored on debut in a 3-0 win at Coventry on 15 September, week later on his third appearance he scored both goals in a2-2 home draw to Burnley. After scoring his eighth league goal on New Years Day the goals dried up. His last game for the Robins was in the 1-0 Championship Play Off Final defeat at Wembley to Hull on 24 May 2008 and had scored 8 goals in 33 appearances and was released at the end of the season.
In July 2008 Byfield joined Doncaster but after four months and 9 appearances he joined Oldham on loan. After one goal in 8 appearances Byfield returned to Doncaster to play a further six matches towards the end on the 2008/09 season before being released from his contract.
On 6 August 2008 Byfield joined Oldham on a short-term deal but after 3 matches in three weeks, her was released and joined Walsall and has now made over forty appearances for Walsall.
