Player Profile – John Anderson

John Christopher Patrick Anderson was born in Dublin on 7 November 1959.

Anderson was on the books of West Brom between 1976 and 1979 and despite playing in 92 reserve team games for the club, he never made a single first team appearance for the club in a major competition.

In August 1979 Anderson joined Preston for a fee of £40,000 and made his league debut in a 3-2 win for PNE against Fulham on 12 January 1980.

Appearances were limited for Anderson with just 5 in 1979/80 and 8 in 1980/81. He became a regular in the 1981/82 season when he made 38 league appearances. He had made 51 appearances in total but was released by Gordon Lee at the end of the season.

Anderson signed for Newcastle on a free transfer, although his signing was low key because the club had recently pulled off a major coup in signing England captain Kevin Keegan., Anderson made his debut as a substitute in the 2–1 win at Blackburn on 1 September 1982 and scored once in 33 appearances during the season.

Anderson played in 41 of the 42 league matches of the 1983/84 season as they won promotion back to Division One with a side that featured Waddle, Beardsley, Keegan and McDermott.

Anderson continued to play in the majority of the matches during the mid 1980’s making 35 appearances in 1984/85; 38 in 1985/86 and 32 in 1986/87.

His 35 appearances in 1987/88 season included his 200th league appearance for the Magpies He suffered disappointment in the1988/89 season as he not only did he just make 21 league appearances but Newcastle also finished bottom of Division One.

Anderson managed to score at least one goal in each of his seasons with Newcastle and had his most profitable season in 1989/90 with 4 goals from 27 appearances as the Magpies finished third in Division Two but missed out in the Play Offs to sixth place Sunderland.

Anderson made his final appearances in 1990/91 with 27 appearances during the season. An ankle injury forced his retirement in March 1992 and was given a testimonial by the club after 10 years as a Newcastle player. During which time he had netted 14 goals from 299 league appearance and 337 appearances in total.

Anderson represented the Republic of Ireland at schoolboy, youth and under-21 levels. His first full cap, was whilst he was with PNE, when he came on as a substitute for John Devine as they lost 4-1 to Czechoslavia on 26 September 1979 Anderson's only international goal came in his second appearance with the match winner in the 3 - 2 victory over the USA in a friendly on 29 October 1979, coming on as a substitute for Pierce O’Leary. Anderson's first international start would came in the 1 - 0 defeat to Chile in Santiago.

Anderson won 16 caps in total although he was an unused substitute for all of the 3 Group B matches of the 1988 European Championships.

Following the ending of his playing days the summer of 1992 saw Anderson appointed the manager of Berwick Rangers but resigned just 8 weeks later.

He was always a fans' favourite at St James’ Park coming 48th in one pole of the top 50 Newcastle players and he is regularly asked to come to the club for ex-players' events. He also works as a summariser on Newcastle games for BBC Radio Newcastle and has assisted the Newcastle Kestrals women’s football club.
