Player Profile – Alan Gowling

Alan Edwin Gowling was born in Stockport on 16 March and joined Manchester united via county schools and Manchester University, where he studied for a degree in economics. He played for United juniors while at University, and once scored seven goals in a 'B' game. Gowling is one of only seven graduates to have played for United.

Gowling gained England caps at amateur, Schoolboy and Under-23 level and represented Britain in the 1968 Olympics.

He made a goalscoring league debut in a 4-2 win at Stoke on 30 March 1968. His most successful goalscoring season for United was in 1970/71 when he scored 8 goals from 20 appearances. Four of these came in a game in a 5-1 win against Southampton on 20 February 1971.

In 1971/72 he enjoyed his longest run in the side when playing in midfield scoring 6 times from 37 appearances. His last game for United also came against Stoke, coming on as a substitute for Bobby Charlton. He played 71 league matches for United scoring 18 goals before joining Huddersfield for £60,000 in June 1972.

He was an ever present and top scorer for Huddersfield in the 1972/73 season with 17 goals, with the next highest on 4 goals. Unfortunately they were relegated on goal difference from Division Two and therefore had suffered back to back relegations.

Huddersfield finished in tenth in 1973/74 with Gowling was top scorer again with 24 goals, 17 ahead of the next highest total. Gowling just missed one match during the season.

For the third season running Gowing was top scorer with 17 goals in 1974/75 as the club was relegated for the third time in four years

After 58 goals from 128 appearances Gowling joined Newcastle for a fee of £70,000 in August 1975 as a strike partner for Malcolm MacDonald. He made his debut in a 3-0 win at Ipswich on 16 August 1975 and scored 16 goals from 41 matches, 3 goals behind top scorer MacDonald.

Gowling scored the Magpies goal at Wembley in the 1976 League Cup Final on 28 February 1976 but lost 2-1 to Manchester City.

Gowling netted 11 goals from 36 appearances as Newcastle finished fifth in 1976/77. After making a total of 92 league appearances with 30 goals for Newcastle he  signed for Bolton in March 1978 for a then club record fee of £120.

His debut for Bolton was in a 1-0 win at Mansfield on 11 March 1978, Wanderers went on to win the Second Division title that season.

Gowling scored 15 goals from 36 appearances in 1978/79 and scored his first goal in the 32nd minute against Bristol City on the opening day of the season. He finished 9 goals behind another player who later joined PNE in Frank Worthington. Gowing scored once on 24 appearances in 1979/80 as Bolton were relegated to Division Two.

He reached double figures again in 1980/81 with 10 goals before joining Preston on a free transfer in September 1982 after scoring a total of 28 league goals in 149 appearances.

Gowling had been elected chairman of the PFA in November 1980 and played part time for PNE initially in defence before returning as a striker.

He made his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United on 4 September 1982. He made a total of 40 appearances during the only season with the Lilywhites. His first goal came in a 3-2 defeat at Oxford on 29 January 1983 and scored in the last three matches of the season to take his tally to five. His last appearance was a 1-0 win at Wigan on 14 May1983.

He became the General Manager of a chemicals company in Buxton and is now the secretary of the Manchester United old boys association. He also regularly summarises Bolton matches on BBC Radio Manchester.
