Player Profile – Stephen Finney

Stephen (Steve) Kenneth Finney was born in Hexham on 31 October 1973.

Finney began his career as an apprentice with Preston after impressing in the reserves the striker made his Lilywhite debut as a substitute for Mike Flynn in a 3-2 home defeat to Hull in the Autoglass Trophy on 14 January 1992.He made two substitute league appearances during the 1991/92 season, with Finney scoring his only PNE goal on the final day of the season in a 2-0 home win over Bury on 2 May.

The 1992/93 season Finney made 4 league appearances but only once in the starting eleven in a 2-1 home defeat against Hull on 9 January 1993, which was his final appearance for the club.

On 12 February Finney joined Premier League Manchester Cityon a free transfer but didn’t make an appearance and joined Swindon on 15 June 1995.

The 1995/96 saw Finney net 12 goals in 30 matches before breaking his leg in a match against Burney. His pre Christmas efforts helped him to a Division Two league title medal.

On his return Finney couldn’t match his earlier start with Swindon and joined Cambridgeon loan for a month on 10 October 1997, scoring twice in 6 matches. Finney had stayed at Swindonfor three years before being released at the end of the 1997/98 season and had made 72 league appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals.

For the start of the 1998/99 season Finney joined Carlisleand had scored 6 goals from 33 appearances before joining Leyton Orient on 27 March 1999. Whilst at Carlisle Finney scored the Cumbrian’s 4,000 league goal.

His stay with the London club only lasted two months, making 5 league appearances in the process.

Finney spent time on trial with Exeter in the summer of 1999, and then dropped into non–league football with Barrow before returning to the Football League with struggling Chester on 18 October 1999 after sending his CV to the club. During his 14 month stint at the club and 22 appearances, he failed to score a competitive goal and was part of the side that was relegated to the Nationwide Conference. In December 2000 he joined Altrincham, initially on loan. He made an instant impact with a hat–trick in a 3-1 victory over Whitby Town.
