Player Profile – George Bargh
George Wolfenden Bargh was born in Bilsborrow on 27 May 1910. The inside forward started his career with Fulwood Amateurs in 1926 and Garstang in 1927.
Bargh joined Preston in February 1928 and made his debut in the 1928/29 season in a 1-1 draw at West Brom on 24 November. He scored on his second appearance nearly two months later in a 2-1 defeat at Oldham on 19 January 1929. His first goal at Deepdale came on his fourth match with a 7-1 victory over Port Vale on 23 February and made 11 appearances during the season.
The 1929/30 season saw Bargh net in his last four appearances of the season to take his total to 6 goals in 23 appearances.
Bargh’s most successful season in front of goal was in the 1930/31 campaign with 14 goals from just 20 league matches. This included a hat-trick in a 7-0 win at home to Cardiff on 13 December and two braces, both at Deepdale in a 3-3 draw against Reading on 3 January and a 2-1 win over Everton on 2 May 1931.
His 100th league appearance for PNE saw him score in a 4-2 win at Deepdale on 2 March 1932 against Grimsby.
The 1933/34 season saw the Lilywhites finish runners-up to Grimsby and promoted to Division One. Bargh only made 9 appearances during the season due to injury but scored 4 goals including a second hat-trick with a 4-2 home win over Millwall on 31 March.
He scored in his first Division One game with the only goal against Grimsby on 25 April and a further brace in a 3-3 draw at Middlesbrough on 3 November 1934. His final PNE appearance came in a 2-0 defeat at home to Leeds on 27 April 1935. In total, Bargh scored 42 league goals in 142 appearances.
Bargh move across the Pennines in September 1935 to join First Division Sheffield Wednesday but his stay only lasted one season making just 5 appearances. Four of these matches came on home soil; his debut was a 2-2 draw against Bolton on 9 September. His only victory with the Owls came on his second appearance with a 1-0 win over former club Preston. His remaining three matches came in February 1936 with a 3-3 draw against Everton and a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth. His final game for Wednesday was a 3-1 away defeat to Derby on 19 February.
In May 1936 Bargh joined Second Division Bury, scoring 10 goals in 22 league appearances in his first season for the Shakers. He netted braces in his first two matches for the club with a 3-1 win at Coventry on 5 September and both goals on his home debut 4 days later with a 2-1 victory over Barnsley. Bargh scored a hat-trick with a 4-2 win over Doncaster on 17 October.
His last appearance for Bury came in a 2-1 win at home to Fulham on 29 April, scoring 13 goals in 90 appearances.
Bargh joined Chesterfield and made his debut in a 2-0 win against Bradford Park Avenue on 26 August and in a 2 -0 defeat at Manchester City a week later. Due to the outbreak of WWII the 1939/40 season was scrapped.
On return to football after the War, Bargh re-joined Bury and made one final appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Luton 0n 14 September 1946.
George Bargh became the manager of the PNE youth team and passed away in 1995.
