Gary Michael Bennett was born in Kirby on 20 September 1962 and had the nickname as 'Psycho' in his playing days.
He started with his home town club, before joining

After 36 goals in 126 appearances Bennett joined Third Division Southend on 11 November 1988. He did score against his former club
The 1991/92 season saw Bennett score 11 goals, 2 behind top scorer again. One of the goals was the winner against Stoke in April 1992 which effectively sealed their safety in Division Three as they finished in 18th position.
Bennett was released at the end of the season after a further 15 goals in 80 league appearances and joined Wrexham.
It was with Wrexham that Bennett enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career. The 1992/93 season saw Wrexham gain promotion from Division Three with 16 goals in 35 appearances, 2 behind top scorer Steve Watkin.
Although Wrexham finished mid table in 1993/94 Bennett scored 32 league goals in 41 appearances. The 1994/95 saw another mid-table finish and top scorer again with 29 goals in 45 appearances. Bennett also scored twice to win the Welsh Cup Final in a 2-1 win over
After 77 goals in just 121 league appearances Bennett was sold by Bryan Flynn on 13 July 1995 to First Division Tranmere for £300,000.
His stay with Tranmere was just over eight months and made 29 league appearances, netting 9 goals. He joined Third Division Preston on 27 March 2006 for a fee of £200,000, which was the record transfer fee paid by the Lilywhites at the time.
Bennett scored on his debut in a 2-1 win at Scarborough on 30 March and made a further seven appearances as
Bennett suffered a shin fracture in a pre-season friendly and didn't return to October. Although struggling with fitness he did score a brace from the bench in a 3-0 win at Deepdale against
Bennett returned to Wrexham on 28 February 1998 for £100,000 and scored 5 goals in 15 appearances for the remainder of the season.

His last season was in 1998/99 and scored his final league goal against a former club in Southend on 29 August and his final appearance was a fortnight later in a 2-0 home win against Torquay and this spell netted 13 goals in 48 appearances.
Injuries forced him to retire in August 1999 and became a landlord of a pub in Skelmersdale.
