Player Profile - Gary Bennett

Gary Michael Bennett was born in Kirby on 20 September 1962 and had the nickname as 'Psycho' in his playing days.

He started with his home town club, before joining Wigan on 9 October 1984. His stay was only for one season and scored 3 goals in 20 appearances. He did appear in the Latics side that beat Brentford 3-1 in the Freight Rover Trophy Final at Wembley.

In August 1985 Bennett was signed by Harry McNally and joined Chester for his first of three stays. In his first season in 1985/86 Chester were promoted as they finished runners up in the Fourth Division. Bennett finished with 13 goals and was second to top scorer and another former PNE player in Stuart Rimmer. The following season he was second to Rimmer again and scored the same amount of goals but in just 33 appearances. Although the 1986/87 season was overshadowed by an incident which left Ian Knight of Sheffield Wednesday badly injured. For the third season running Bennett reached double figures in goals and was second behind top scorer Stuart Rimmer.

After 36 goals in 126 appearances Bennett joined Third Division Southend on 11 November 1988. He did score against his former club Chester in his first month but after 16 months and 6 goals in 42 appearances he returned to Chester for a fee of £20,000 in March 1990.

The 1991/92 season saw Bennett score 11 goals, 2 behind top scorer again. One of the goals was the winner against Stoke in April 1992 which effectively sealed their safety in Division Three as they finished in 18th position.

Bennett was released at the end of the season after a further 15 goals in 80 league appearances and joined Wrexham.

It was with Wrexham that Bennett enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career. The 1992/93 season saw Wrexham gain promotion from Division Three with 16 goals in 35 appearances, 2 behind top scorer Steve Watkin.

Although Wrexham finished mid table in 1993/94 Bennett scored 32 league goals in 41 appearances. The 1994/95 saw another mid-table finish and top scorer again with 29 goals in 45 appearances. Bennett also scored twice to win the Welsh Cup Final in a 2-1 win over Cardiff.

After 77 goals in just 121 league appearances Bennett was sold by Bryan Flynn on 13 July 1995 to First Division Tranmere for £300,000.

His stay with Tranmere was just over eight months and made 29 league appearances, netting 9 goals. He joined Third Division Preston on 27 March 2006 for a fee of £200,000, which was the record transfer fee paid by the Lilywhites at the time.

Bennett scored on his debut in a 2-1 win at Scarborough on 30 March and made a further seven appearances as Preston won the Third Division title.

Bennett suffered a shin fracture in a pre-season friendly and didn't return to October. Although struggling with fitness he did score a brace from the bench in a 3-0 win at Deepdale against Blackpool on 13 December 1996. His last appearance came in a 5-1 defeat at Luton on 22 February 1987. Bennett had scored 4 goals in 24 appearances for Preston.

Bennett returned to Wrexham on 28 February 1998 for £100,000 and scored 5 goals in 15 appearances for the remainder of the season.

On 25 July 1998 Bennett returned to Chester for a third time for a transfer fee of £50,000. He scored 12 goals in 16 appearances by November but then failed to score in his remaining 25 matches, although he did finish as top scorer for Chester for the first time.

His last season was in 1998/99 and scored his final league goal against a former club in Southend on 29 August and his final appearance was a fortnight later in a 2-0 home win against Torquay and this spell netted 13 goals in 48 appearances.

Injuries forced him to retire in August 1999 and became a landlord of a pub in Skelmersdale.
