PLAYER PROFILE – NIGEL JEMSON

Nigel Bradley Jemson was born in Preston on August 10 in 1969.

After being taken on as a YTS trainee he made his debut for PNE against Aldershot as substitute in the final game of the 1985/86 season. PNE lost the match 4-0 and subsequently finished 91st in the league.

The following season he scored with his first league start for the club on January 17th in a 1-1 draw with Swansea. He then scored in his next two matches against Lincoln and Halifax. Following the signing of Frank Worthington he did not play again that season but PNE were promoted to the third tier.

After a total of 32 league games scoring 8 goals for PNE, Brian Clough signed him for Nottingham Forest for £150,000 in March 1988.

In his first season with Forest he spent his time in the reserves or on loan. His debut for Bolton was on Boxing Day 1988 against PNE. PNE winning 3-1. He returned to Preston on loan in March 1989 making his debut against ironically against Bolton and was on the losing side again with Bolton winning 1-0.

The following season 1989/90 he made his debut for Forest against Aston Villa as a substitute. Made his first start against Luton and scored his first goal in a 2-0 win against Derby.

Jemson also scored the only goal in the League Cup Final against Oldham.

He scored five goals in the first four games at the start of the 1990/91 season and was selected for England Under 21's. But injuries limited the number of games he played.

Following the signing of Teddy Sheringham and played in 47 games he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday for £800,000. Injuries again hampered his time with the Owls and were unable to hold a regular place. His highlight with the Owls was to score two goals in a 3-2 win against Manchester United after coming on a substitute. He also played in the 3rd Round FA Cup match against PNE at Deepdale with the Owls progressing to the next round.

Following the signing of Mark Bright his chances were limited and went to Grimsby on loan.

After scoring 9 goals in 51 games for the Owls, he transferred to Notts Co for £300,000 in September 1994 but only scored 1 goal in 14 appearances and was farmed out on loan to Watford and Rotherham.

Again he had success at Wembley scoring both goals for Rotherham in a 2-1 win against Shrewsbury in Auto Windscreens Shield.

July 1996 he was transferred to Oxford for £60,000 scoring 18 league goals during 1996/97 season and knocked Sheffield Wednesday out of the League Cup.

After scoring a further 9 goals during 1997/98 season he transferred for £100,000 to Bury in February 1998. Although he scored only one goal they avoided relegation that season.

After moving to Ayr United he returned to Oxford at the start of 2000 but could not find the net in 13 appearances. In July 2000 he transferred to Shrewsbury and reached double figures in goals for the 2000/01 and 2001/02 seasons.

He hit the headlines in 2002/03 when the Shrew knocked out Everton on Wayne Rooney's debut. Jemson scoring the first and a last minute header to win the game after Everton had equalised. The Shrew were thrashed by Chelsea in the next round and were also relegated from the football league. Although he did score an eight minute hat-trick against Bury

He left The Shrews and after a short spell in Northern Ireland with Ballymena he returned to England with Ilkeston Town where he would go on to become player manager.
