Player Profile – Darel Russell
Darel Francis Roy G. Russell was born 22 October 1980 in Mile End
Russell began his career as a youth player at Norwich. He made his debut at the end of the 1997/98 season in a 1-0 win at Reading on 3 May 1998. His first goal came in the following season in a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield on 24 March 1999. The 1999/2000 season Russell scored 4 league goals including a brace in a 2-1 home victory over Bolton on 24 October 1999. After six years and 6 goals in 132 league matches in Norwich's midfield he made his last appearance in a 2-0 home win over Preston on 4 May 2003.
Russell joined Stoke on 8 August 2003 for £125,000, when he was 23. He played regularly missing only one match during his first two seasons. He began his Stoke career playing at right back, before being moved to a right winger and then central midfield. His debut was a 3-0 win at Derby on 9 August 2003. His first goals came in a brace in a 3-1 win at home to Sunderland on 16 September 2003. He received his first red card for Stoke in a 0-0 draw against PNE on 2 February 2006. Russell won the Championship player of the month award for November 2006 and had his best season in from of goal in 2006/07 with 7 league goals, 3 coming in 5 matches. He became a very versatile player for Stoke and made 171 league appearances with 16 goals before returning to Norwich.
On 30 July 2007, Russell rejoined the Canaries for an undisclosed fee (reported to be around the £410,000 marked down from £600,000 due to a 30% sell-on clause the Canaries had in the deal taking Russell to Stoke in 2003), on a three-year contact.
His second debut was at Deepdale in a 0-0 draw on 11 August. Three days later he scored on his second home debut in a 5-2 Carling Cup victory over Barnet. He received consecutive red cards during the season in defeat at Leicester and Coventry.
Norwich were relegated to League One after a poor season in the Championship in the 2008/09 season. He received two red cards during the season including a second one against PNE in a 2-2 draw on 8 November. In the summer of 2009 Norwich rejected a bid of £500,000 from Premier League newcomers Burnley Norwich's asking price was believed to be around £750,000.] After staying at Norwich Russell played a major part in earning them promotion to the Championship at the first time of asking after winning League One, putting in some impressive performances at the heart of central midfield under manager Paul Lambert, with Russell occupying a more defensive central midfield position in a diamond formation. His last match was a 2-0 home defeat to Carlisle on 8 November 2010, he has scored a further 10 league goals in 112 appearances in his second spell with the Canaries.
On 1 July 2010, it was confirmed that Russell had rejected the offer from Norwich of a new contract, and he was released.
Russell signed for Preston on a three-year deal on 4 August 2010. He made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat to Doncaster on 7 August 2010 and made 25 appearances during the 2010/11 campaign.
He scored his first and what turned out to be only goal for Preston in a 2-0 Carling Cup victory against future club Charlton on 13 September 2011. Russell only made two league appearances for the Lilywhites, the last a 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth on 29 October 2011. He was transfer listed by the club in May 2012.
Russell signed on loan for League One side Charlton until January 2012 on 24 November 2011. His debut four days later was a 2-0 win over Huddersfield. He scored on his third appearance in a 1-1 draw against Oldham on 17 December. On 7 January 2012 this loan was extended until the end of the season. He helped Charlton to become League 1 Champions, scoring 2 goals in the process in 11 appearances. His last match saw him sent off in a 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield on 24 March 2012.
On summer transfer deadline day 2012, Russell joined Portsmouth on an initial one-month deal. His Pompey debut was a 1-0 home defeat to Oldham on 1 September 2012. His loan was extended and made his last of 17 appearances in a 3-1 home defeat to Hartlepool on 26 January.
Russell left Portsmouth on 28 January 2013, a day before his contract with the club was due to expire.
