After scoring 20 goals from 80 appearances for Sheffield United, Philliskirk joined Oldham for a fee of £25,000 on 13th July 1988. His stay at Oldham was a short one as it only lasted five months. In that time Philliskirk had scored one goal from ten appearances.

On 10th February 1989 Philliskirk joined Preston. This again lasted for only a short space of time before departing at the end of the season.

Philliskirk made his debut for the Lilywhites on 11th February 1989 as PNE drew 1-1 at home to Bristol Rovers. His third appearance saw Philliskirk score a brace as another Burnley old boy Tony Ellis score a hat-trick as PNE beat Chesterfield 6-0. The first time in ten seasons that Preston had scored six in a match. Philliskirk scored in consecutive games on two occasions. The first was at the beginning of March with victories over Brentford and Mansfield. The second was at the start of the following month as he scored in the 4-1 home defeat against Fulham and in a 2-2 draw at Aldershot. Philliskirk’s final appearance was in the last game of the season in a 3-3 draw against Champions Wolves when he came on as a substitute to replace Nigel Jemson. Preston finished sixth and made the play-offs for the first time although Philliskirk was not involved in the two matches against Port Vale in the Semi Final. For Preston Philliskirk had made 16 appearances, scoring 6 goals.

Philliskirk joined Bolton for a fee of £50,000 on 22nd June 1989 and formed a prolific partnership with a former PNE and Burnley player David Reeves. Philliskirk scored on his debut at Cardiff on 18th August 1989 and scored the winner against Swansea to reach the milestone of Bolton’s 1000th league victory. Philliskirk was leading scorer for Bolton with 18 league goals in 1989/90 and again in 1990/91 with 19 league goals.  Philliskirk scored in the play off semi final and was voted Bolton’s player of the year.

With the arrival of John McGinley, appearances became limited and joined Peterborough for a fee of £85,000 on 17th October 1992. Philliskirk had scored 52 league goals from 141 appearances for Bolton.

Philliskirk scored eleven goals in their First Division campaign of 1992/93 and scored on his debut against Leicester in a televised match on ITV. Philliskirk made his debut the following day at Plymouth and made a total of 19 appearances scoring 7 goals in the 1993/94 season. The following season Philliskirk scored one goal from 13 appearances.

In the 1995/96 campaign Philiskirk join Carlisle on a month’s loan scoring one goal in three appearances. But as the cash strapped club could not afford to sign Philliskirk on a permanent basis he return to the Turf Moor club for the final few appearances. The eighth and last of these was as substitute as replacement to Andy Cooke at home to Bristol City on 23rd December 1995. Philliskirk had made 40 league appearances for Burnley, scoring 9 goals.

Shortly after Philliskirk joined Cardiff for a fee of £60,000 making 28 appearances and scored 4 goals in the remainder of the 1995/96 season.

Philliskirk was by now playing more of a sweeper role and made 33 appearances in 1996/97 scoring his only goal of the campaign at Ninian Park against Northampton.

The 1997/98 season saw Philliskirk join initially Halifax on a month’s loan on Christmas Eve of 1997, scoring three goals from two appearances. In February 1998 Philliskirk joined Macclesfield until the end of the season as he scored one goal from 10 league appearances, although nine of these appearances were as a substitute.

On retirement of his playing career Philliskirk began to take referring examinations and became a Class One referee in the Unibond Premier League.

The lure of a coaching role with Andy Ritchie at Oldham in 1998 was too much and gave up his referring role.

In June 2002 he became First Team Coach to Ian Dowie. On Dowie’s departure to Crystal Palace Philliskirk was offered a coaching role by Palace but turned it down as he didn’t want to up root his family.

He became Assistant Manager to Brian Talbot and on his departure Philliskirk took over the role of Caretaker Manager for one match towards the end of February 2005 as Oldham lost at Huddersfield 2-1

In March 2005 Philliskirk returned to his coaching role at Oldham and although there has been four managers since then he has remained in his current position.
