Player Profile – Archie Goddard
Archibald Lee "Archie" Goodall (3 Jan 1865 – 20 November 1929) was born in Belfast. Goodall's father was a soldier in the British Army and was stationed in London, he was posted to Belfast where Archie was born in 1865 but the family eventually settled in Kilmarnock.
His career began in the 1880’s with brief spells at Everton who then played at Anfield and the now defunct Liverpool Stanley. After a violent clash between Everton & Stanley he left Merseyside and joined Derby for his first spell with the club. He scored on debut for the Rams in a 3-2 victory against Notts County in February 1888. But his first spell at Derby was a short one. Just before the start of the inaugural Football League season in September 1888, he quit to join his brother Johnny’s club, Preston
The 1888/89 season was the greatest in Preston’s history, and Goodall could have been a major part of it. He made his League debut at Wolves on 15 September 1888, scoring in a 4-0 win. His next match 2 weeks later was his last for PNE in a 3-2 win at Derby, he left for Aston Villa for £100 in October 1888. During his brief spell at Villa he proved an effective inside-right, scoring 7 goals in 14 league appearances. He scored on debut in a 6-1 win at home to Blackburn on 13 October and netted braces in consecutive 4-2 win against Burnley & Derby.
In May 1889 Goodall joined Derby County where he was reunited with his brother John. Together with Steve Bloomer, the Goodall brothers formed the backbone of a County side that regularly challenged for top honours over the following decade.
His second Rams debut was a 1-1 draw at Stoke on 7 September and had to wait for his 13th appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Notts County on 21 December.
From the start of the 1893/94 season to the end of the 1896/97 season Goodall played in every league match. This saw him make his 100th league appearance in a 3-3 draw at home to the Wednesday on 21 October 1893 and his 200th league match in a 1-0 win against Sunderland on 23 January 1897. The 1896/97 season saw Goddall score 14 goals including an hat-trick in the league in a 4-1 win at West Brom on 6 February and a brace twice in the FA Cup although the second was a 3-2 Semi-Final defeat to Everton.
His 300th league appearance came in the 1900/01 season in a 1-0 win at Stoke on 24th November. In total Goodall scored 48 goals in 380 league matches. He also played a further 44 games and scored 4 goals in the FA Cup, helping County reach three FA Cup Finals in 1898, 1899 and 1903. In 1898 before the final against Nottingham Forest he was caught trying to off-load his Cup final tickets to a ticket tout. Despite being strong favourites Derby eventually lost 3–1. He missed the 1899 final due to injury and in 1903 they lost 6–0 to Bury.
After leaving Derby in May 1903 Goodall briefly joined non-league Plymouth before becoming player-manager at Glossop North End in January 1904.. In October 1905 he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was 41 years and 153 days old when he made his final league appearance for Wolves on 2 December 1905 against Everton, making him the oldest player ever to play for that club although Wolves lost 5-2.
Internationally Goodall had to wait for the Irish FA to change its rules governing the selection of non-resident players before he made his international debut for Ireland on 4 March 1899 as they beat Wales 1–0 in Belfast. He thus became one of the first four Irish players based in England to be selected to represent Ireland. Three weeks later, on 25 March, aged 34 years and 279 days, Goodall became the oldest player to score in international football during the 19th century when he scored Ireland's goal in a 9–1 defeat to Scotland in Glasgow.
Goodall remained a regular at centre-half for Ireland until he was almost 40. On 28 March 1903 he scored the opening goal in a 2–0 win against Wales, helping Ireland clinch a share in the 1903 British Home Championship. The goal also saw Goodall, aged of 38 years and 283 days, become the oldest goalscorer in Ireland's history. He made his final appearance for Ireland as a centre-forward in a 1–0 win against Wales on 21 March 1904 whilst playing for Glossop.
After retiring as a player, Goodall travelled Europe and the United States as part of a strongman act before settling in London, where he lived out his remaining years.
