Thomas Towie was an inside forward who started his career with Dunbarton Union in 1890
He moved to Preston for the 1891/92 season and made hisdebut in a 2-0 defeat at Notts County on 5 September 1890. His first win came on his third appearance a week later on his home debut with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland. After scoring in the 5-1 win over Burnley on 21 September, he then scored in four consecutive matches during the month of October. Following the 4-2 win over Blackburn which he scored a goal on 24 October he was on the winning side for the next 13 matches in all competitions and tasted defeat for the first time in nearly 4 months with a 2-0 FA Cup defeat to non-league Nottingham Forest on 13 February. His last game for the Lilywhites was scoring in a 4-0 victory over Darwen on 18 April. He had scored 9 goals from 22 League matches.
After a spell with Renton and Celtic he returned to England to join Derby for the 1893/94 season. His Rams debut was at Deepdale as his former club Preston beat Derby 1-0 on 2 September. His first win came on this fourth appearance with a 2-1 victory at home to Sheffield United on 4 November. After a 2-1 win at Everton in his nest game, he scored his only goal for the Rams in a 2-1 win over Darwen on 18 November.
In total Towie made 8 league appearances for Derby, his last was a 4-3 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on 9 December 1894. He then joined Rossendale in 1894 and returned to Renton in 1895.
