Player Profile – James Dickie
James Dickie was born in Montrose on 22 September 1903. The winger started his career with Preston but only made 3 appearances. His debut for the Second Division club was a 1-0 home win over Wolves on 2 January 1926. He had to wait almost 4 months for his next appearance, scoring in a 2-1 Deepdale victory on 25 March. His last match for Preston was two days later in a 3-0 defeat at Port Vale.
Dickie joined Division Three North side New Brighton and in 1927/28 saw his most successful season in appearances and goals with 42 league appearances and 11 goals. His debut was a 3-0 defeat at Darlington on 27 August 1927 and had to wait until his sixth appearance for his first goal for the club in a 3-1 home win over Halifax. His goal tally increased into double figures by netting 5 in his last 7 appearances in the season.
After a further 4 goals in 14 appearances for New Brighton Dickie joined Second Division Bristol City in November 1928. His debut for the Robins was a 2-1 defeat at Reading on 1 December 1928. A week later he made his home debut with a 1-0 win over Preston. Dickie again had to wait for his sixth appearance again netting a Boxing Day goal as Bristol City lost 3-2 at West Brom. Dickie scored his first brace with a 5-0 win over Millwall on 16 March 1929.
Dickie made a further 23 appearances in 1929/30, with his only goal coming on his final home appearances with a 4-1 win over Nottingham Forest on 26 April. His final match for Bristol City came in a 2-2 draw at Deepdale on 3 May 1930.
On 1 July 1932 Dickie joined Chester but stayed for just two months with his only came being a defeat against Southport On 1 September Dickie re-joined New Brighton for the second time making a further 14 appearances with 4 goals. His final match was a 2-0 defeat at Wrexham on 6 May 1933.
James Dickie passed away in 1960.
