Player Profile – Michael Good
Michael Leigh Harrington Sullivan Good was born in Linlithgow on 1 July 1875. He started his career in Scotland with Airdrie Hill in 1894 and Airdrieonians a year later.
Good moved to England and joined second division Small Heath in 1896/97. A short, stockily-built forward, able to cover the half-back positions as well, he made his debut in the Second Division on 19 December 1896, playing at right half in a 2-0 defeat at Loughborough. His only goal for Small Heath came in the following season with a 3-3 draw at Manchester City on 11 April 1898.
He had a run of games at inside right at the end of the 1897/98 season and the beginning of the next, but failed to score enough goals. After 15 league matches, Good played his last match for Small Heath in a 2-0 defeat at Grimsby on 8 October 1899. He moved to Southern League club Watford in 1898,
Good returned to the Football League with Second Division Preston in the 1901/02 season. His North End debut was a 3-1 defeat at West Brom on 7 September. His home debut saw his first victory a week later beating Woolwich Arsenal 2-0. Good saw Preston win 6 games on the trot, as PNE scored 17 goals but conceded none. His two goals for Preston came on consecutive matches with a 5-1 home win over Newton Heath on 7 December and a 4-0 home win against Barnsley a week later. Good made 24 league appearances as PNE finished third, his last match was a 2-1 defeat at Lincoln on 26 April.
The 1902/03 season saw Good joined fellow second division club Bristol City. His Robins debut was a 2-1 home win on 6 September against Chesterfield. His first goal for Bristol City came on his next home match and third appearance two weeks later with a 3-1 victory over Manchester UniteGood scored five goals for the Robins with further goals in victories over Doncaster, Manchester City and the return match against Manchester United. His fifth league goal came in a 3-0 home win over Burnley on 21 March.
Good made 32 league appearances for Bristol City as the club finished fourth, Goods final match was a 3-0 win at Burton United on 25 April.
Good switched to non-league football with Reading in 1903, Brighton in 1904 and Southern United in 1905. Micky Good passed away in 1959.
