He started his career with non-league Burscough before joining Preston in December 1948. But he had to wait five years to make his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Christmas Day 1953.
His home debut wasn’t until 16 October 1954 in a 3-1 defeat to Charlton. He made 8 appearances during the season with him playing in the last five fixtures of the season and scoring an hat-trick on the final day of the season as PNE won 4-0 at Charlton..
Performances were still limited with just 6 appearances in 1955/56, including a goal in the 3-3 draw at home to Blackpool and 5 appearances in 1956/57, his one goal of that season came in the second match as the Lilywhites lost 3-1 at home to the eventual champions Manchester United.
His final game after 20 appearances came in a 1-0 home win to Wolves on 6 April 1957, but didn’t leave PNE until May 1958 when Waterhouse joined Second Division Rotherham.
