Player Profile – John Hetherington
John Arthur Hetherington was born in Rotherham on 7 August 1906.
He started his career with had his most successful season in front of goal for Wolves in 1929/30 when he scored 7 league goals. By playing in 22 matches it was also the most number of league games played in one season for Wolves. His first goal came in a 3-2 defeat at Blackpool on 7 December 1929.
In the 1930/31 season 3 or his 4 goals came in September 1930, one of these was in a 5-4 defeat at Preston on 13 September.
His first brace came on his final game of the 1932/33 season with a 4-2 win at home to Everton on 6 May 1933. Hetherington went one better the following season with a hat-trick against Huddersfield on 23 September 1933 with a 5-2 victory.
His last match for Wolves came in a 2-0 defeat at Derby on Boxing Day 1934; he had scored 24 goals in 95 league matches.
The winger joined another First Division side in Preston who made his PNE debut came in a 4-3 win at Huddersfield on 19 January 1935. His first goal came a week later in a 2-0 victory at Swindon in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Hetherington made 9 appearances for Preston which his only league goal coming in a 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough on 16 March.
Hetherington only made 6 appearances for PNE in 1935/36 but scored twice, the first being in a 1-0 win at home to Derby on 2 September. His last goal was 16 days later with a 2-2 draw at Deepdale against Everton. His final game for the Lilywhites was a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on 28 September 1935.
For the 1936/37 season Hetherington joined Third Division South side Swindon and was an ever-present during the season. He made his Swindon debut in a 2-0 home victory over Northampton on 29 August 1936. His first goal came on his third appearance in a 5-2 defeat at Bournemouth on 5 September. Although only scoring twice in his first 13 matches Hetherington finished the season with 11 goals, including a brace in a 2-2 draw at home to Luton on 3 April.
Hetherington made 23 appearances for Swindon in 1937/38 with his two goals against Bristol City and Aldershot in consecutive matches in September. His final match for Swindon was a 1-0 win at home to Clapham Orient on 19 February 1938.
Hetherington joined Watford and a week later was in the 3-2 defeat at Northampton. He made 5 league appearances to take his total to 8 in 1938/39. His only goal came against Walsall in a 4-2 home win on 10 September. Hetherington was only on the victorious side with Watford twice, both times against Walsall. His final match was in a 0-0 home draw against Torquay on 1 October 1938.
John Hetherington passed away in 1977.
