Player Profile – Steve Robinson
Stephen (Steve) Robinson was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland on 10 December 1974. Robinson came through the junior ranks with Tottenham and made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn on 30 October 1993. His only other league appearance for Spurs was in a 1-1 draw at Arsenal on 6 December 1993.
On 20 October 1994 Robinson joined Bournemouth on a free transfer and scored 5 goals in 32 league appearances for Bournemouth.
The 1995/96 season saw Robinson alternate between his usual midfield role and as a strike partner for Steve Jones and scored 7 goals in 41 league appearances. After previously played in the Under 21’s for Northern Ireland, Robinson gained the first of his 4 ‘B’ International caps.
The following season saw Robinson gain his first full international cap and appeared again as a striker and a midfielder scoring 7 goals in 40 appearances. Robinson scored on his 100th league appearances for the club in a 2-1 defeat at Bury. Robinson scored in consecutive home matches with a brace in victories over Brentford and Luton in November 1996.
Robinson was leading scorer for Bournemouth in the 1997/98 season with 10 goals from 45 appearances as he played on the left, right and centre midfield.
His most productive season for the Cherries was in 1998/99 when he netted 13 league goals including a brace on two occasions in a 5-0 home win over Burnley on 21 November and in a 2-0 victory at home to Wycombe on 27 February 1999. His 200th league appearance can on the final day of the season in a 0-0 draw against Wrexham.
The attacking midfielder was now alerting the attention of several clubs as he scored 9 goals from 40 appearances. His last appearances for the Cherries were in a 2-2 draw against Wigan on 6 May 2000 and had scored 51 goals from 241 appearances.
On 26 May 2000 Robinson was signed by David Moyes at Preston for a fee of £375,000. He made his debut for the Lillywhites as a substitute for Iain Andersonin a 2-1 victory at Grimsby on the opening day of the 2000/01 season. His first eleven team appearance came in a 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury in the Worthington Cup on 22 August. Although better known as a high-scoring attacking midfielder, his first League start for Preston came as a makeshift striker when he partnered Steve Basham in a 1-0 home win against Tranmere, and he continued in this role for the next two matches when he partnered Erik Maijer. After spells as a regular substitute and again as an emergency striker, he netted his first goal for the club direct from a free-kick in a 3-1 defeat at Wimbledon on 13 January 2001. He would have been hoping for a regular place in the starting line-up following the transfer of midfielder Michael Appleton to WBA, but knee and ankle injuries effectively ended a rather frustrating first season at Deepdale starting in only 6 of his 22 appearances for the club.
Unfortunately, the 2001/02 season was even worse for Robinson as the continued good form of Mark Rankine and Sean Gregan in the Preston midfield kept him on the substitute’s bench. Paul McKenna had also matured as a player, and these factors, along with bad luck on the injury front, meant that Robinson was limited to just two substitute appearances during the season. Also Michael Keane, Brian Barry-Murphy and Eric Skora had pushed ahead of him in the pecking order at Deepdale.
Eventually he handed in a transfer request and the signings of midfielders Dickson Etuhu and Thordar Gudjonsson was the final straw for Robinson, who had been linked with moves to numerous clubs, including Blackpool.
His last appearance for PNE was a 2-0 win at Brighton in the FA Cup on 15 January. Robinson joined BristolCity on loan in March 2002, and made his debut for the Robins in a 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield on 19 March 2002, and netting his first goal in his third appearance for the club in a 3-3 draw with eventually promoted Reading at Ashton Gate. His sixth and final appearance was in a 5-1 defeat at Blackpool on 13 April 2002.
However, on returning to Deepdale, manager David Moyes had left to become the new boss of Everton, and Preston had appointed Craig Brown as the new boss. Despite offering to wipe the slate clean and offer Robinson as equal a chance as the other players, he decided to head for pastures new, and signed for Luton by Joe Kinnear for £50,000 on 24 June 2002. Robinson had scored one goal in 24 league appearances, including 18 as a substitute.
Robinson made his Luton debut in a 3-2 home defeat against Peterborough on 10 August 2002. Robinson scored on one goal during the season in 29 appearances before getting in injured in mid-match. The goal came from the penalty spot in a 3-0 home victory against Swindon on 28 September.
Robinson missed the first two months of the 2003/04 season through injury but later re-established himself in centre-midfield as he made 34 appearances, scoring twice. His first goal for the Hatters came in a 3-2 home win against Wrexham on 15 November. His second league goal was a superb long range goal in a 1-0 win at Blackpool on 13 December 2003 which was voted as Luton’s goal of the season.
The 2004/05 saw Robinson partnered Kevin Nicholls in midfield as Luton won the Division One Championship, making 31 appearances and scoring 4 goals. His fourth goal of the season came in the final minute of the last home game of the season as Luton beat Brentford 4-2.
Robinson made 26 appearances for Luton in the 2005/06 season, scoring twice as Luton consolidated their Championship position in 10th spot. He made his 100th appearance in a 2-1 win over Millwall on 29 August 2005. Robinson missed a month out through injury in October 2005 and another two months in January 2006 after picking up an injury in a thrilling 5-3 FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in front of the BBC cameras. Robinson scored in the 43rd minute to give the Hatters a 2-1 with a fine turn past England star Jamie Carragher and then a precise strike into the bottom corner past Scott Carson. Described as a “Goal of real quality” by the BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson.
Robinson made 38 appearances during 2006/07 as Luton were relegated to League One and was captain for a large part of the campaign with regular captain Chris Coyle injured.
Robinson was rewarded with a new contract in January 2007 until the end of the 2008/09 season. Robinson has continued to be a key member of the team but the club has struggled on and off the field with the club being deducted 10 points for going into administration and relegation to League Two.
On 26 July 2008 Robinson agreed to a mutual termination of his contract at Luton. His last match was exactly three months earlier in a 2-0 defeat at Doncaster, Robinson netted 9 goals in 185 matches for Luton.
Robinson has been capped by Northern Ireland eight times; his last appearance was in a 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan in a World Cup qualifier on 3 September 2005.
He is currently a County Performance Coach (Co. Antrim) and Assistant Manager of the Under-19 Northern Ireland squad with the Irish Football Association.
