Player profile – John Platt
John Roger Platt was born in Ashton-under-Lyne on 22 August 1954. The goalkeeper started his career with non-league Ashton United before joining Oldham in June 1972.
Platt had to wait until the 1975/76 season when he broke through from the reserves. With the exception of the 1978/79 season when he suffered a serious injury he was the first choice keeper for the Latics for four seasons and made 109 league appearances in the process.
In August 1981 Platt joined Fourth Division Bury and made 20 appearances during two seasons at Gigg Lane.
In July 183 Platt joined Bolton but only made 10 appearances, In November 1984 Platt joined Tranmere on loan and made 8 appearances in total.
In February 1985 Platt joined Preston and made his debut in a 3-1 victory at home to Cambridge on 26 February, it had looked like the Lilywhites fortunes had changed when PNE beat Bournemouth 2-1 in his next match but in the next four games with Platt in goal saw just one win before being replaced with Glen Campbell for the remainder of the season which saw PNE drop to the Fourth Division for the first time in their history.
Platt stated the Fourth Division campaign as first choice keeper and played in the first 38 league and cup matches. His last match was a 1-1 draw at home to Rochdale on 8 February 1986. He was initially replaced by Phil Harrington before Alan Kelly Junior took over between the sticks as North End had to look for re-election to the Football League.
Platt retuned to Oldham after the end of his playing career to join the Latics ‘Football in the Community’.
