Player Profile - Les Campbell
Leslie Campbell was born in Wigan on 26 July 1935. The winger started with his home town club and was part of Wigan’s 1952/53 Lancashire Combination Championship winning side.
In June 1953 Campbell joined Preston and made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves on 31 October 1953. His time as PNE was mainly spent as understudy to Tom Finney and Angus Morrison. The most league appearances in one season was 13 which he achieved in the seasons 1953/54; 1955/56 and 1956/57. His first goal came in the 1954/55 season with a 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United on 12 February.
In seven seasons Campbell made just 64 appearances, scoring 6 goals. His last PNE appearance was a 2-1 defeat at Manchester City on 23 April which was Tom Finney’s penultimate match.
In July 1960 Campbell joined Blackpool but only made 11 appearances, his final game for the Seasiders was a 1-0 home defeat to Preston on 18 February 1961.
In June 1961 Campbell joined Fourth Division Tranmere and made his debut in a 2-0 home victory over Accrington on 19 August. A week later he scored his first goal on his third appearance in a 2-1 defeat at Darlington. Injuries had limited to just 19 appearances in the 1961/62 season. The following season Campbell scored 3 goals from 40 appearances. All three came in his first home league match of the season on 8 September with a 6-1 win over Hartlepools.
The 1963/64 season saw Campbell net 4 goals from 43 appearances; his final match was a 2-1 defeat at Brighton on 17 April 1964. Campbell had scored 9 goals from 102 league appearances.
