Player Profile – Matty Young

 

Matthew (Matty) Spratt Young was born in Cambois 1901and played in the outside right position.

 

Young joined Hartlepools United from Preston Colliery in the 1923/24 season and netted 3 goals from 29 appearances as the Third Division North side has to see re-election with Barrow.

 

The 1924/25 season saw Young sign for Third Division South side Reading and scored once in 6 appearances as the Royals finished in fourteenth position.

 

Young left Reading to join non-league Workington before returning to the football league when he was signed by Preston manager Frank Richards in 1926.

 

Young made his debut for Preston in the number seven shirt in a 2-1 home defeat against Portsmouth on 18 December 1926. He scored his only goal for Preston on his third appearances in a 4-0 victory over South Shields on 27 December. His sixth and last appearance came in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on 23 April 1927.

 

Young returned to non-league football when he signed for Southern League side Aldershot.
