Player Profile – Bill Bradford
John William Bradford was born on 6 November 1903 in Peggs Green. He started his career with Birmingham but didn’t make a first team appearance in 1923/24.
The following season he left the First Division club to join Brighton in Division Three South. His Gulls debut and made his debut with a 1-0 win at Watford. In the following week he made two more appearances in 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth and Northampton.
The 1925/26 season saw Bradford join Second Division Preston, but made just one match in a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley on 19 December 1925.
Bradford joined Walsall for the 1926/27 campaign and for the next 11 seasons. His debut for Walsall also saw him score his first league goal in a 2-2 draw at Doncaster on 28 August. Bradford made 21 league appearances during the season.
He became a regular in the Walsall side netting 3 goals in 33 appearances in 1927/28, two of the goals came in a 7-0 home win over Coventry on 11 February 1928. His only goals in 1928/29 came in a brace in a 7-2 home victory Exeter on 1 December.
The 1929/30 season saw the only time he was an ever-present playing in all 42 league games, scoring 3 times. The next season saw his best season in front of goal with 5 in 36 matches. Bradford scored another brace against Exeter, scoring both goals in a 2-1 home win on 18 April.
For the next three seasons Bradford made a further 42 matches, the 1934/35 and 1935/36 season saw Bradford make 31 and 35 league appearances respectively.
Bradford scored 3 goals in 1936/37; his last goal for the club came in a 2-1 victory at home to Gillingham on 10 August 1937.
The final season for Bradford saw him make a further 17 league appearances to take his tally to 318 league matches for the Saddlers with 21 goals. The Wing Half’s final match was a 5-1 home defeat to Southend on 22 January 1938.
Bill Bradford died in 1984.
