Player Profile – James McLean

James C. McLean was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1877 and played in the Wing-Half position. He made his Walsall debut in a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on 4 November 1899. His first goal came in a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup over Small Heath. Walsall finished 12th in 1899/1900 with McLean making 26 appearances.

The following season McLean scored 5 league goals, the first being a 2-1 win over Glossop on 27 October. McLean made 33 appearances as Walsall finished in 16th position and relegated. His last appearance was a 0-0 draw at home to Middlesbrough on 22. April 1901.

 McLean joined West Brom and made his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Glossop. His first goal came on his second appearance five days later in a 3-1 victory over Preston.

The 1901/02 season was his most successful in front of goal by netting six goals, in two seasons McLean scored 10 goals in 57 appearances.

McLean joined Preston for 1903/04 and scored on debut in a 5-1 win at Stockport on 5 September 1903. Preston won the Second Division Championship that season with McLean scoring twice in 33 league appearances.

For the next two seasons McLean made 68 appearances for PNE, with North End finishing runners-up in 1905/06.

McLean stayed for a further five seasons but only scored two more league goals. The first on 13 October 1906 with a 4-2 win over Middlesbrough, his last was a 2-2 draw at home to Everton on 14 September 1907. His final appearance came on 3 January 1911 with a 1-1 draw at Newcastle. In total he had scored 4 goals in 185 league appearances.

James McLean died in 1914.
