Player Profile – Yoann Folly
Yoann Folly was born on 6 June 1985 in Paris and is a French-born Togolese footballer.
Folly was brought to England in 2003 by then Southampton manager Gordon Strachan for £250,000 from St.Etienne.
He made his debut on 27 March 2004 with a 1-0 home victory over Spurs and made 9 Premier League appearances as the Saints finished twelfth.
His last appearance in the Premier League came in Southampton's relegation season of 2004/05 with a 5-1 defeat at Spurs on 18 December 2004.
Folly joined NottinghamForeston loan although he only made one league appearance although he scored on debut in the 3-0 FA Cup win at QPR on 8 January 2005.
In April 2005 saw Folly made two league appearances for Preston, his debut was a 1-1 draw at home to Gillingham on 2 April with his last match was a 3-0 win over Brighton three days later.
The 2005/06 season saw Folly make 5 appearances in total with two league, two League cup and his final appearance for the Saints was a 4-3 home victory in the FA Cup against MK Dons on 7 January 2006. He had made 14 league appearances in total forSouthampton.
Folly was signed on loan by Shefield Wednesday and made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat to Luton on 31 January 2006 to ease injury problems as the then manager Paul Sturrock had been impressed by him after taking over as Saints manager from Strachan in 2004.
Folly's promising displays meant that he joined Wednesday on a permanent basis at the end of the 2005/06 after 14 appearances for the Owls. He rejected the offer of a new contract at St Mary’s. However,Southamptondid receive an undisclosed compensation fee, under FA rules due to him being under the age of 24. He climbed off the substitutes' bench at Hillsborough to score a last minute extra-time winner for Wednesday in the League Cup 2nd round versusHartlepoolon 28 August 2007.
After 39 league appearances in his second spell he handed in a transfer request to the club in January 2008, citing concerns about his lack of first team football, and he joined Championship rivalsPlymouththat month for a fee believed to be around £200,000, joining manager Paul Sturrock for the third time in his career.
Despite this, Folly failed to make a serious impact in the clubs first-team, being out for a sustained period of time due to a number of injuries and illnesses. Folly made 22 league appearances forPlymouthbut fell out of favour under new manager Paul Mariner.
Folly joined League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge on an initial one-month loan at the end of February 2010. On 29 March 2010 Folly returned to parent club Plymouth Argyle from his loan spell at Dagenham because of a midfield crisis at the club, but, on 2 May 2010, it was announced that Folly, alongside two other players would be released.
After a trial at Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen he signed for the club on 26 July 2010. Folly scored his first goal for Aberdeen and first league career goal, on 26 December 2010 in a 2–1 win at Hibernian. However, just a week later on New Years Day, Folly broke his ankle after a 65th minute tackle by Dundee United’s Paul Dixon. Ex PNE Manager Craig Brown confirmed Folly would not play again during the 2010/11 season.
Folly returned to football action when he played in the Dons' Aberdeenshire Cup semi-final defeat by Deveronvale on 28 August 2011.
Internationally Folly represented France at youth level, but later switched his allegiance to Togo. He was included in Togo's provisional squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but pulled out to pursue his International Career in France. However, Folly did make his senior international debut for Togo in August 2008 against DR Congo.
