Player Profile - Dave Jones

David (Dave) Robert Jones was born in Liverpool on 17 August 1956. He started his career with Everton signing a professional contract in May 1974 and made his debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester on 1 November 1975. His first season, Jones made 13 appearances for Everton. Initially he started at the left back position before moving to the right side to accommodate Mel Pejic. The 1976/77 season saw Jones score is only league goal for Everton and made a total of 28 appearances during the season. The following season was the most in his Everton career making 34 appearances. The 1978/79 season saw his appearances limited to just 11 following Achilles tendon problems and a broken wrist. During his time at Everton he represented England at youth and under-21 level.

After 79 league appearances, he left Everton to play for Coventry in June 1979 for a transfer fee of £275,000. But due to a knee injury, which threatened to end his football career, he found his appearances limited. He made his sky blue debut on 18 August 1979 in a 3-2 defeat at Stoke and went on to make a further 6 appearances in the 1979/80 season. The 1980/81 season Jones just made 4 appearances before leaving Coventry in March 1981 to join Seiko in Honk Kong.

In August 1983 Jones returned to England and joined Gordon Lee at Preston and made his debut on the opening day of the 1983/84 season in a 1-0 win at Bournemouth. Jones made 37 appearances during the season as Preston finished sixteenth in Division Three. He only scored his only goal for Preston in a 2-1 defeat at Orient on 3 December 1983.

The 1984/85 season Jones made a further 13 appearances. His fiftieth and last appearance came on 11 May 1985, the last match of the season in a 1-0 win at York as the Lilywhites were relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time and had conceded 100 goals during the season.

Dave Jones started his managerial career as assistant manager to Bryan Griffiths at Southport in 1986/87 and made two appearances for the club before they both left and took up identical roles at Mossley for the 1988/89 season.

In July 1990, he joined Stockport as a manager for their youth team and took over as first-team manager from Danny Bergara in March 1995. The 1996/97 season saw Stockport promoted to the second tier after finishing runners-up to. He also took the club to the semi finals of the League Cup where they were narrowly defeated by Middlesbrough, 2-1 on aggregate despite an impressive 1-0 win at the Riverside Stadium in the second leg.

This promotion brought him to the attention of Southampton, who offered him a contract to manage their Premiership team. His reign during the 1999/2000 season was rocked by his arrest on charges of child abuse during his employment as a care worker after he had left playing professionally in the late 1980s.

Jones was forced to defend his case on Merseyside whilst managing a Southampton. In January 2000, Southampton decided to suspend him on full pay until the case was resolved with Glenn Hoddle taking over his managerial duties.

The case was thrown out in the first week at Court and Southampton paid off the remainder of Jones' contract and he was free to leave the club - Jones contended that this amounted to unfair dismissal and took the case to industrial tribunal but their decision was upheld.

Jones took over at Wolves in January 2001 and guided the team to a twelfth place finish. In the 2001/02 season Wolves won six games out of six in February to earn Jones the Division One Manager of the Month award. After sitting in second place and 11 points ahead of West Brom their form deserted them and were beaten by Norwich in the Play-Off semi finals.

The 2002/03 season saw Wolves finished fifth and won the Championship Play-Off final, returning to top level play for the first time in 19 years. However with just seven victories the team did not prove strong enough to stay in the top tier and were relegated to the Championship with Leeds and Leicester on 33 points.

Following a poor run of form at the start of their first season back in the Championship, Dave Jones was sacked by Wolves on 1 November 2004 and the following year took up the position at Cardiff, replacing Lennie Lawrence in May 2005.

During Jones' first season in charge of Cardiff, they achieved a respectable eleventh place in the Championship. The 2006/07 season saw Cardiff finish in thirteenth position.

On 9 March 2008 Jones led Cardiff to their first FA Cup Semi Final tie since 1927 after beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Cardiff beat Barnsley 1-0 in the Semi-Final at Wembley to book an FA Cup Final place against Portsmouth. They lost the Final, played on 17 May 2008, with the only goal of the game being scored by Kanu, after 37 minutes.

The 2008/09 season has seen Cardiff regularly feature in a play-off spot, and earned Jones the Championship manager of the month for October 2008.
