Player Profile – George Fitton
George Arthur Fitton was born in Melton Mowbray on 16th May 1902. He played non-league football for Kidderminster Harriers before joining West Brom in 1922.
Fitton, an outside-left, made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Manchester City on 11th November 1922. His first goal came in the following season with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool on 25 August 1923. Fitton scored 11 goals in 96 league appearances over a nine year period. The most appearances in one season for West Brom was 19 in 1925/26 and 1927/28. It was also in 1927/28 when he his best season in front of goal for the Baggies with 3 goals. His last match for WBA was a 0-0 home draw to Swansea on 2 February 1931.
In 1931 he moved to Manchester United who was in the Second Division at the time. Once again he was unable to gain a regular place in the side but scored on debut with a 5-1 win over Oldham on 26 March 1932. Fitton played 11 games and scored twice in the calendar year with his final match being a 2-2 draw at Bury.
Midway through the 1932-33 season Fitton joined Preston, his debut was a 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Christmas Eve, his first goal for the Lilywhites was 3 days later on his third appearance with a 2-0 win at Oldham. He netted 7 goals in 19 league appearances which was his most successful in front of goal for PNE.
He helped Preston to gain promotion to Division One in 1933/34 when they finished runners-up to Grimsby with 6 goals in 24 appearances. Fitton scored 6 goals in 24 appearances, but was mainly remembered for creating chances for Stephenson, Dougal and Palethorpe.
Fitton started well in the 1934/35 with 3 goals in his first 5 matches and scored 5 in 19 matches in total. His last game for PNE was a 2-0 defeat at home to Leeds on 27 April 1935. Fitton had scored a total of 18 league goals in 62 games before he was sold to Third Division side, Coventry City.
He made his Coventry debut in a 2-1 defeat at Reading, his first goal came on his fourth appearance with a 5-0 home win over Millwall on 9 September 1935. He then scored 4 goals in his next 3 appearances including a brace in a 5-0 home win over Brighton on 21 September 1935.
The 1935/36 season was his most successful in front of goal in his career with 12 goals in 24 matches and his first season he helped Coventry win promotion to the Second Division.
The following season Fitton scored 7 goals in 25 matches. His first two came in his first two matches of his season whilst the remaining 5 goals came in a 4 match spell including a brace in a 3-0 win at Norwich.
Fitton stayed two seasons, his final City match was a 1-1 home draw to Nottingham Forest on 25 September 1937, in total he had scored 21 goals in 51 games. He ended his career at Kidderminister Harriers.
George Fitton died in 1984.
