Player profile – Alf Biggs
Alfred George Biggs was born in Bristol on 8 February 1936. Although he became a legend with Bristol Rovers he could easily had played for the red half. Biggs was due to sign for Bristol City but was kept waiting and took the bus to Eastville instead.
He signed professional forms with Bristol Rovers in February 1953 and stayed for eight years, playing in Division Two for all of those years and was an ever present in 1956/57. For this period he formed a lethal partnership with Geoff Bradford who scored 242 goals for the Pirates in 13 years.
In his first spell with Bristol Rovers Biggs netted 77 league goals in 214 league appearances before he was signed by Jimmy Milne at Preston for £18,000 in July 1961.
He made his debut on the opening day of the 1961/62 season as the Lilywhites lost 4-1 at Luton. This was the first time that PNE had played outside the top division for the first time in over a decade.
His first goal came on his sixth appearance in a 3-2 home defeat against Walsall on 9 September. Prior to December Biggs had only scored 4 goals and the club in 20th position after 20 matches. Biggs then scored the first of two hat-tricks in a 4-1 home win over Scunthorpe on 2 December and then in a 3-1 home win over Brighton on 14 April. Biggs scored 17 goals in 21 matches as PNE finished the season in tenth position with Biggs finishing as leading scorer with 21 goals from 39 appearances.
Biggs started the season with the number nine shirt but after 15 months in Lancashire he wanted to return to the West Country and Bristol Rovers in October 1962. His last appearance was a 6-2 home defeat to Cardiff on 29 September. Biggs had scored 22 goals in 48 appearances which Milne had described Biggs as the best player he had ever purchased.
Geoff Bradford’s career was coming to the end and formed another partnership this time with Ian Hamilton, netting a record for Bristol Rovers of 37 goals in1963/64. The Pirates finished mid table even though they had scored 91 goals during the season but had conceded 79.
After 101 goals in 210 appearances for Bristol Rovers, Biggs joined Walsall for £10,000 in March 1968 and scored 9 goals in 24 appearances.
The stay was only for eight months as Biggs joined Swansea in exchange for Jimmy McMorran in October 1968. Biggs scored 4 goals in 16 league appearances as Swansea finished in tenth position in Division Four.
In July 1969 Biggs joined former Rovers player Doug Hillard at non-league Taunton.
After hanging his boots up he became a car salesman, postman, baker, maintenance man at Eastville and a parcel delivery man, he currently lives in Poole.
