Player Profile – David Steele
David Steele was born in Carluke on 29 June 1894 and began his career as wing half with Armadale and then played with St. Mirren Football Club whilst working part time as a miner before the First World War. Steele then moved to Scottish Junior Club Douglas Water Thistle.
In 1919, he joined then Southern League club Bristol Rovers playing for them during their first years in the league after they became members of the newly formed Division Three. and made his league debut in a 2-0 defeat at Millwall on 28 August 1920 and went on to make 29 appearances that season
The 1921/22 season saw him score his first goals with a penalty in a 4-2 win over Charlton on 10 September and then netted in an FA Cup victory over Exeter and a 4-3 defeat at Newport. His 2 league goals came in 67 appearances for Rovers.
Herbert Chapman signed Steele in a £2,500 deal to take him to Huddersfield Tn in May 1922. and spent seven seasons with the club including in 1926, it became the first English team to win three successive league titles – a feat that only three other clubs have been able to match.
Steele made his Terriers debut in a 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough on 26 August 1922. His first goal for the club came on 23 December with a 4-0 win over Arsenal, this was to be his only League goal for the Terriers, Steele made 33 appearances for Huddersfield in his first season for the club as they finished third in Division One. Steele made 3 appearances for Scotland, the first in 1923
The 1923/24 saw Steele win the first of three Division One titles with Huddersfield with 31 league appearances. Retaining the title the following season Steele made 39 League appearances and made his 100th league appearance for Huddersfield with a 2-0 win over Bury on 14 April 1925. A hat-trick of league titles came in the 1925/26 season with Steele making 18 appearances.
Steele made his 150th league appearance with a 1-0 win at home to Bolton on 15 October 1927, this was also his benefit match. Huddersfield reached the FA Cup Final in 1928 and played in the 3-1 defeat against Blackburn at Wembley on 21 April. During the run to the Final Steele scored twice in the FA Cup with a 4-2 win over Lincoln and a 4-0 win over Middlesbrough.
Steele made 186 appearances for Huddersfield with is last match being a 3-2 defeat at Burnley on 15 April 1929.
Steele joined Second Division Preston for the 1929/30 season on a free transfer and made his Lilywhite debut in a 2-0 defeat at Reading on 31 August and had to wait for his seventh match before he was on the winning side. Steele made 29 appearances for Preston and scored two goals, his first was in a 6-4 defeat at home to Blackpool on 19 October 1929. His final appearance for PNE, Steele scored in the 2-2 draw against Bristol City at Deepdale on 3 May.
Steele joined Bury in 1930/31 but didn’t make an appearance and joined Ashton National.
Steele began his managerial career when he worked at Bury as a coach. Similar roles followed at Danish side Bold Klubben F.C. and Sheffield United.
In May 1936, he was appointed Bradford Park Avenue manager. He spent six years at Park Avenue and even turned out as an emergency centre forward against Sheffield Wednesday in October 1942 scoring one goal. He resigned in 1943 to re-join Huddersfield. In the club's first post-war season, Huddersfield finished just one place above the relegation positions in Division One and Steele resigned. His record for Huddersfield as manager was played 45, won 13, drawn 8 and lost 24.
He was working on the family's fruit farm when Bradford City tempted him back into football in July 1948. He became the second man, after Peter O'Rourke to manage both Bradford league clubs. He won just one of his first 18 games in charge as City finished bottom of Division Three (North) in 1948/49. The following season City came 19th, before a 7th-place finish in 1950/51. Steele left in February 1952 with the club again struggling in the bottom half of the league. He returned to Huddersfield Town for a third time as a scout. His grandson, David Shaw played for Town in the 1970s. He also ran a pub in Stanningley. He died in May 1964 aged 69.
