Player Profile Eric Snookes
Eric Snookes was born in Birmingham on 6 March 1955. When he left school he was due to sign for Aston Villa but the deal fell through when Peter Docherty left the club.
Docherty didn’t forget Snookes when he moved to Preston as assistant to the late Alan Ball senior. Snookes joined Preston as an apprentice before signing professional forms in March 1973.
Snookes made his Preston debut in the number three shirt in a 2-0 defeat at Brighton on 31 March. He played in the remaining six matches after his debut, including in the 1-1 draw at home to Burnley which gained the necessary point to avoid relegation.
He had a run of 13 games midway in the 1973/74 season with his last appearance being a 1-0 home defeat to Fulham on 23 February 1974 as the Lilywhites wasn’t so lucky this time as they was relegated at the end of the season to the Third Division.
He was released by Bobby Charlton and in July 1974 Snookes joined Crewe and in his one season made 34 league appearances. In July 1975 Snookes joined Southport and stayed for three years making a total of 110 league appearances with two goals, as Southport finished each season one place off the bottom of Division Four.
July 1978 Snookes joined Rochdale who had finished the one place below Southport at the end of the previous season but had survived re-election as Southport lost their league status to Wigan.
Snookes stayed at Spotland for five years and had a bid of £60,000 from Carlisle during that time but stayed at Rochdale. He went on to make 183 league appearances with one goal. Rochdale remained in the lower reaches of the Fourth Division and during his spell with the club the highest they finished was 15th in 1980/81.
In July 1983 Snookes joined Bolton and made 6 appearances for the only season with the club. In the 1984/85 season he moved to non-league Macclesfield where he made 6 league appearances in place of Neil Fairclough.
After retirement from football he worked on the railways and is an active member of the PNE former players’ association.
