In total Gudjonsson had made 73 league appearances and scored 10 goals for VfL Bochum.

In August 1997 Gudjonsson joined Belgium side RC Genk and saw his most profitable spell in front of goal. He scored 9 goals in 33 appearances in 1997/98 and a further 9 goals in 1998/99 but in 28 appearances. His third and final season for RC Genk saw Gudjonsson score 10 goals in 33 appearances.
