Player Profile IAN BRYSON

James Ian Cook Bryson was born in Kilmarnock on 26 November 1962. Bryson started his football career with Hurlford United FC which is situated near to Kilmarnock and currently play in the West Region of the Scottish Junior Football Association.

After being rejected by Ayr Boys Club at 18 he was a few weeks later invited to a trial with Kilmarnock . He signed by Kilmarnock and made his debut against Celtic for Danny McGrain's testimonial match. A few weeks later he played against Rangers in the League Cup losing 6-0 over the two legs with the late Davie Cooper scoring a hat-trick in both legs.

Whilst playing for Kilmarnock he still worked at the family dairy farm in Ayrshire. Bryson stayed for seven years at Kilmarnock making 215 appearances and scoring 40 goals.

In August 1988 Dave Bassett's Sheffield United signed him for £ 40,000. Bryson stayed for five years making 155 appearances and scoring 36 goals.

Bryson joined Barnsley in August 1993 but was surprisingly transferred to Preston three months later on his 31st Birthday after rave reviews from the Yorkshire side. Bryson made 16 appearances scoring 3 goals.

Bryson made his debut for Preston on December 4th 1993 coming on has sub for Tony Ellis at Shrewsbury in an FA Cup second round tie. Preston winning 1-0. Bryson made his league debut the following week scoring in a 2-2 draw at home to Scarborough . Bryson becoming a fixture in the side in 1993/94 as Preston reached Wembley for the first time in 20 years as they played Martin O'Neill's Wycome in the Third Division Play Off Final. Although Bryson scored with an overhead kick on 32 minutes to give Preston the lead. It was to lead to disappointment as Wycombe losing 2-1 at halt time went on to win 4-2.

The following season saw Bryson only miss one game and score five goals as Preston reached the play offs again but lost this time in the Semi Final to Bury. Bryson was the set piece expert in the side although he lost this position to an 18 year old David Beckham for a month.

Bryson only missed two games in the 1995/96 season scoring nine league goals as he motivated the side to win the Third Division Championship and as captain was presented with the trophy and medal on May 4th at home to Exeter . Bryson was also selected with three other Preston players for the PFA Division Three side.

Bryson played in his 151st and final game for Preston in a 2-0 home win against Walsall in the last game of the 1996/97 season. He had scored 19 goals in his Preston career.

Bryson was released by Preston during the close season and signed for Rochdale. In two seasons he made 54 appearances scoring 1 goal although injuries had limited the number of appearances at Spotland.

Bryson was released and moved into non-league football with Bamber Bridge and helped the club to reach the second round of the FA Cup in 1999.
