Player Profile - Ricardo Fuller
Ricardo Dwayne Fuller was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 31 October 1979 and is a product of Jamaica's youth system under Brazilian and former Technical Director of Jamaica, Rene Simoes. Fans named him 'Wily Boo' because of his slick moves and dribbling skills while he played for Tivoli football club in Jamaica's premier league. He arrived in England for a trial with Charlton in December 1999 but a £1 million deal to sign for the club fell through when a medical revealed a back problem that required surgery.
Fuller signed for Crystal Palace in February 2001 for a fee of £1 million. He made his debut on 20 February in a 1-0 defeat at Barnsley. Unfortunately he was not on the winning side in any of his 8 appearances. His final appearance for Palace was a 2-0 defeat at home to Wolves on 28 April.
Fuller retuned to Jamaica in June 2001, but four months later joined Scottish side Hearts on loan. Fuller's debut was in a 2-1 defeat at Hibernian on 21 October and scored his first goal in his fourth appearance as Hearts beat Dundee 2-0. He scored a brace in a 3-1 win against Motherwell and in a 2-1 FA Cup victory against Ross County. His eighth and last goal was on his final appearance for the club in a 3-2 home defeat against Livingstone on 12 May 2002. Fuller had made 28 league appearances for the club before returning to his Jamaican club due to Heats being unable to afford the fee.
In the summer of 2002 Fuller was signed by Craig Brown at Preston for £500,000 and scored on his debut in a 2-1 defeat at home against his former club Crystal Palace on 10 August 2002. Four days later he scored again in a 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest. Fuller scored a brace in a 3-1 home win against Burnley on 2 November and in a 2-0 home win to Leicester on 26 November. But four days later suffered a knee ligament damage at Coventry to end his season. In his first season for PNE, Fuller had netted 9 times in 18 appearances.
Fourteen goals in 23 league appearances up to the end of December 2003 including a hat-trick against Burnley in a 5-3 home win on 20 December Fuller also scored a brace against Coventry and in an FA Cup tie to Reading, this led to talk of Premiership interest. This and his ongoing knee problems affected his form and saw him only score 3 further goals in 15 appearances, but was enough to become the leading scorer for the club in the 2003/04 season. Fuller put in a written transfer request at the end of the season after previously turning down a contract extension.
Fuller only made two appearances for Preston in the 2004/05 season and scored on his final appearance in a 2-1 defeat at Gillingham on 14 August 2004. In total Fuller had scored 27 goals in 58 league appearances for PNE.
Various clubs had been interested in Fuller which included Leeds, Wolves, Fulham and Portsmouth. Leeds withdrew their offer when he failed a medical and concerns over Fuller's knee caused Pompey to renegotiate an initial £2m deal for the Jamaican striker.
Under the new terms, then Pompey boss Harry Redknapp paid an initial £250,000, with Preston receiving £15,000 for every appearance made by Fuller, up to a maximum price tag of around £1.5m.
Fuller made his Pompey Premiership debut on 30 August 2004 in a 4-3 home win against Fulham and scored on his second appearance on 11 September as Pompey beat Crystal Palace 3-1. Fuller did not score anymore goals for Portsmouth and spent the majority of his 31 league appearances from the bench.
After a failed medical ended a deal with Sunderland, Fuller signed for Redknapp again when Southampton paid £90,000 for him on 28 July and made his Saints debut in a 0-0 draw against Wolves on 6 August. His first goal came in his fifth appearance in a 1-1 draw at Coventry on 29 August. Further goals came at Derby in September and Millwall the following month.
Fuller joined Ipswich on loan in February 2006 and scored twice in three appearances. The first was on his debut in a 2-0 win against Leicester. After not scoring against Preston on his second appearance, he did score on his final appearance against another former club Crystal Palace as Ipswich drew 2-2.
On his return to Southampton he scored 6 goals in 6 appearances, starting with a brace in a 3-2 home win against Cardiff on 1 April 2006.
Fuller made one league appearance for Southampton in 2006/07 and played his last game for the club in a League Cup tie on 23 August when the Saints beat Yeovil 5-2. Fuller had made 31 league appearances Southampton, scoring 9 times.
On 31 August 2006, Fuller joined Stoke for approximately £500,000 and made his debut on 23 September in a 2-0 defeat at Wolves. A week later Fuller scored on his home debut against Preston in a 1-1 draw. The 2006/07 season saw Fuller score 10 goals in 30 appearances. His total of 11 goals in all competitions was top for the club but with 2 red and 10 yellow cars he was bottom in the disciplinary record.
In the 2007/08 season, Fuller netted 15 goals from 42 appearances including a hat-trick against West Brom as Stoke gained promotion to the Premier League.
Fuller scored Stoke's first-ever Premier League goal, a late consolation in a 3-1 defeat to Bolton on the opening day of the 2008/09 season. He followed this up with another goal in Stoke's 3-2 win over Aston Villa in their first ever Premier League home match. This goal won Match of the Day 'Goal of the Month' for August.
Fuller made the headlines when he was sent off for violent conduct on 28 December 2008 against West Ham. Following West Ham's equaliser, Fuller argued with team-mate and Captain Andy Griffin, before slapping Griffin's face. Referee Michael Jones gave Fuller a straight red for violent conduct and West Ham went on to win the match 2-1. Fuller scored 11 goals from 33 appearances as Stoke finished in a respectable twelfth position and has now scored 36 goals in 109 league appearances for Stoke.
Fuller has made 32 international appearances for Jamaica, scoring 4 goals. Of which 10 appearances and 2 goals was whilst he was with Preston between 2002/04.
