On 28 January 2002 Reid joined Preston on loan and scored as a sub in a 4-2 win against Sheffield Wednesday on 5 February 2002This was to be his only appearannce for the Lilywhites
Reid then went on loan to Northampton, making his debut on New Years Day 2003 in a 2-1 victory against Barnsley at Oakwell. He made a total of 19 appearances for the club for the remainder of the season before a permanent move was made on 3 June for £100,000. His first league goal came in a 2-0 win at Yeovil on 25 August 2003 and was made captain scoring 3 goals from 33 appearancesas a Northampton player.
During Paul Hart's first summer as the Barnsley manager, he quickly snapped up Reid on 14 July 2004 for a undisclosed fee. Reid spent most of his first season at Oakwell, flirting with the midfield and defence. He scored on his debut in a 1-1 draw at Milton Keynes Dons on 7 August and had his most successful season to date in front of goal with three goals from 41 appearances and was one of the most impressive players during the 2004/05 campaign. When Andy Ritchie took charge of the Barnsley team, Reid was made captain at the beginning of the 2005/06 season which saw him go on to be one of the most successful captain's in Barnsley's recent history with them winning the League One Play Off Final on penalties against Swansea at theMillennium Stadium on 7 May 2006. He made a futher 33 appearances, scoring once.
After 37 appearances in 2006/07 Reid signed a 2 year contract extension in May 2007 to remain at Barnsley, despite interest from several English Championship clubs, following Barnsley's successful relegation battle in 2006/07. However, after losing his place in the team in 2007/08, it was announced by manager Simon Davey n 8 January 2008 that Reid had been placed on the transfer list by Barnsley. His last appearance for Barnsley came in a 3-2 win at Southampton
Reid went on loan to Carlisle United on 27 March 2008 until the end of the season as the Cumbrians looked for cover in the last 8 matches, but just made one appearance.
Reid was however released by Barnsley on 30 June 2008, after having his contract terminated by mutual consent; he had scored 3 goals from 114 league appearances.
On 1 July 2008 he signed a contract with Colchester United, joining on a free transfer and has made over 30 appearances for the club. His only league goal for the ‘U’s so far came in a 2-1 victory at Northampton on 29 November 2008
